Guided Circular Walk from Levkogia

CIC Walk Monday 9th April 2007: Jorunn Solheim & Hans Saetrevik

The walk takes a circular route from Levkogia – about 4.5 km east of Plakias. We will climb to the summit of Timeos Stavros, (433 m. altitude) . A southerly “agrotiki” road zigzags up the south side of the mountain. From the end of the road there is a path to the summit and to the small chapel, this path is steep in parts. There is a good view from the summit along the south coast from the coastline around Matala and the Paximadia Islands in the east, and to the White mountains and Frangokastelli in the west. There is also a good view of the beaches facing us – Skinaria, Ammoudi, Damnoni and Plakias. We will walk back down the same path we came up, and then turn east, reaching “agrotiki” road that goes via Gianniou to Levkogia.
Meeting point: 09.45 am in Armeni on the Rethymnon-Spili road just before entering the village - about 5 km along the national road above Rethymnon. At 10.00 am we will drive South via the Kourtaliotou Gorge.
Distance: About 8 km, about 3 hours, a total of 350 m ascent/descent
Grade: Easy and moderate walking on “agrotiki” roads, a bit harder walking on the paths, steep in parts up the short path to Timeos Stavros.
