Garden Art and Design: A New Concept for Rethymnon |
Opening before Easter: Watch out for the sign! |
Babis and Manolis Psistakis, who run a wholesale nursery in Chamalevri,
are opening their new GARDEN ART AND DESIGN centre at the Spili junction
of the National Highway—see map opposite. Both brothers are truly
knowledgeable, studied horticulture at university in the UK and speak
excellent English, - not to give the impression that we consider UK
horticulture to be superior in any way—we don’t. But for those English
speakers who enjoy gardening, whose Greek is not that great, and who
have problems translating plant names, this is a help. So, what’s
coming? Glazed pots and interesting plants from Italy, different types
of garden furniture and maybe even a gazebo! More details to follow. |
Recipe: Belgian Rabbit in Black-Cherry Beer (what else?!) |
Ingredients:
2 rabbits, cleaned and ready to cook
2 tbs. flour
100 gr. butter
2 onions—chopped
2 carrots—sliced
1 litre Black - Cherry Beer
A few tbs Jenever (Belgian spirit)
200 ml stock
Bouquet Garni
Raspberry vinegar
1 tsp. red currant jam / jelly
500 gr morello cherries (stones removed)
125 gr sugar (optional)
Cinnamon stick
Salt and pepper to taste
|
Method:
Cut the rabbits into portions and coat them with the flour.
Brown the rabbit in the butter, along with the chopped onions.
Then add the carrots and a bit more flour. Pour in the stock and
half of the black-cherry beer and stir. Add the bouquet garni
and salt and pepper to taste. Cover the pot and stew on a low
heat for 2 hours until the meat is tender.
In another pot add the remaining beer, the cinnamon stick and
sugar, and bring to the boil. Wait for the liquid to thicken a
bit. Add the morello cherries, jenever, raspberry vinegar and
redcurrant jelly—cook for another 10 minutes. Remove the
cinnamon stick and add the contents of the pot to the stewed
rabbit. Serve with boiled potatoes. |
Rethymnon Shopping Tip
We admit that black-cherry beer and Jenever
might be a bit difficult to track down on Crete, though
Carrefour in Heraklion do have a wide selection of Belgian
beers, including raspberry, which will do just as well, and we
do know of at least a couple of Belgians who live in Rethymnon!
You could probably substitute raki for the jenever.

Pressing Need
for Dial-a-Laundry in Rethymnon?? |
|
This message goes out in response to a heartfelt plea from a valiant
Swedish friend who works somewhat unsociable hours in a bar (very hard,
too, we might add) and doesn’t have a washing machine. All well and good
that there are ‘Laundry-Mats’ in town (and for those of you who don’t
live here, no, ‘Laundry-Mat’ wasn’t a typing error, just one of the many
examples of fusion Gringlish that we have come to know and love), but
using these involves a journey, hassle, and time that would be better
spent on more fruitful occupations—e.g. writing that novel, learning
Japanese, winning the Nobel Prize, watching ’Animal Planet’, eating
chocolate or sleeping. In short, ’Wash and go’ is a no go. What our
friend needs to find is a ‘collect and deliver’ laundry service. |
This facility might be really useful for loads of people, especially in
the winter. Tumble-driers are an exotic, expensive and rare luxury on
Crete (we’ve yet to meet someone who has bought one here), hardly
surprising given the climate for most of the year, when you can just
hang your stuff on the line and it will dry in half an hour — a good
thing too, for ‘green energy’. Trouble is, though, in the winter, when
it rains (which it can do for days), using ’environmentally green
laundry tactics’ means that your damp washing does start to go really
green. And mouldy. And smelly. And it’s not very nice. So if anyone
knows of such a service, or is prepared to start one up, please
contact
the CMB team. |

One of these is enough! |
