Red Cross ‘Coffee and Cake Morning’ in May
On May 9th from 10 am until 1.30 pm Bob and Eveleen Wright will be hosting a ‘Coffee and Cake Morning’ at their home, Villa Estia in Maroulas, Rethymnon Province, in aid of the local Samaritans who are the ‘Search and Rescue / Emergency First Aid’ branch of the Hellenic Red Cross. There will be an entrance fee of 10 euros which will also buy you a raffle ticket (and there are some really great prizes to be won!). As we reported in our February edition, our local Samaritans rely almost exclusively on charitable donations for funding and are currently in need of help in order to finance a desperately needed ‘4 by 4’ rescue jeep which will cost in the region of 15,000 Euros. We are hoping that the money raised from the Coffee and Cake morning and from other fund raising events (including profits from the Rethymnon CIC February excursion and a forthcoming benefit concert by the Rethymnon Youth Orchestra, - for further details of this orchestral event please see below) will go some way towards helping to fund this. For the Coffee and Cake Morning donations of cakes would be really welcome. And if you are planning to donate a cake it would be very helpful if you could let Bob and Ev know ahead of time.
And anyone who could offer the loan of some garden chairs for the day would also be a good friend, too. Contact details for Bob and Ev are as follows:

Rethymnon Municipal Youth Orchestra: Benefit Concert
We are delighted to announce that the Rethymnon Municipal Youth Orchestra will be performing a benefit concert in aid of our local Branch of the Samaritans of the Hellenic Red Cross on Friday 7th May. The concert is scheduled to start at 9pm and will take place at the Nerantze Mosque (Odeon). At the time of going to press we didn’t have the final details of the works that are going to be performed -
but if the recent benefit concert for Agape in March is anything to go by, it’s bound to be a vibrant and uplifting experience! The Rethymnon Municipal Youth Orchestra is an amateur symphony orchestra, consisting mostly of high school and university students, but essentially anyone playing an instrument and wishing to play it with others is welcome. The orchestra’s activities are mainly in Rethymnon, but also have an eye on the rest of Crete. The repertoire is ‘symphonic’, that is to say: classics, but also The Police, Frank Zappa, Manos Hadzidakis and other contemporaries arranged for symphony orchestra. The orchestra has even worked together with Greek popstar Alkinoos Ioannidis. For further information about the benefit event and / or the orchestra please contact Rino on 6944758441
