Easter and More!

Easter and MoreHere in Rethymnon we are gearing up for the most important celebration in the Greek calendar - Easter! This is a truly wonderful time to be on Crete, and though we’ve said it before, we’ll say it again, if you do have the chance to experience a proper Cretan Easter this is not something that is to be missed! Here in Rethymnon, preparations for the festivities start in earnest during Holy Week, these include the baking of special breads, and dyeing of Easter eggs. On Good Friday in the evening you will be able to witness the procession of the Epitaphos (funeral bier) through the streets. The procession usually starts at the Church of Four Martyrs and makes its way through the Old Town to the Mikri Panagia.

On Holy Saturday, the mood in town starts to lift. From about 11pm people start to assemble outside churches for Mass, and with the announcement ‘Christos Anesti’ (Christ has risen) the celebrations really begin! You can find out more about some of the more traditional aspects of Cretan Easter celebrations in our April edition from last year. In the meantime - Happy holidays!

God of the Month: Aphrodite

God of the Month: AphroditeOnce again thanks to Arlette Veltjen (and partner Triantafillos) from Restaurant Paradiso in Agia Galini for giving us the suggestion for the April God of the month. And, once again lunch was so good! OK, so why is Aphrodite our God of the month? Well, as we said in our March edition (when we were writing about Pan) just because. ‘Hang on a minute, though,’ I hear an eagle eyed reader cry (?!) ‘Haven’t you already written something about Aphrodite in a previous edition?’ Well, yes, but this gal has so many stories to tell! We won’t remind you about the story of her birth which involved Kronos cutting off his genitals and casting them into the sea and Aphrodite emerging from the resulting foam (yuk!) ; instead we will give you a much more sentimental tale. It is said that when Adonis was mortally wounded by a wild boar, Aphrodite’s tears took the form of roses. Which is sweet. Unfortunately, though, Aphrodite was no angel. In fact she really was a bit of a hell raiser and caused no end of difficulties in the love department. If she had just stuck to other Gods /Goddesses it wouldn’t have been such a problem, but she got tangled up with mortals too! And then she got extremely jealous if anyone else seemed to be having a good time. And once Aphrodite got jealous, she got really jealous! You really didn’t want to mess with her if she was in a bad mood!

Let’s Dance the Tango!

Let's Dance the TangoOne of the great joys of living on this island is the huge variety of music and dance that is on offer. For anyone who enjoys music and moving their body at the same time it’s a bit like being a child in a sweet shop. Anyway, enough of waxing lyrical about Cretan song and dance. Some of our international readers might be a bit surprised to learn that there is a serious ‘tango’ and latin dance scene in Rethymnon with a variety of places that host dance classes. For example, the cultural centre that is underneath the Post Office on Moatsou (entrance round the back of the Post Office) will be hosting regular sessions from April. On 10th April and 24th April lessons will start at 8pm, after the lesson there will then be an ‘open floor’ session. And, if that isn’t enough every Wednesday and Friday night from 9-10 pm there will also be belly dancing lessons. Brilliant! To find out more contact Sofia on 6970306660.
