Renaissance Festival Programme


August Extravaganza

Even without the wine festival there are loads of great events taking place in August. Below are this month’s Renaissance Festival highlights. Unless otherwise stated, all events take place at Erofili Amphitheatre, within the grounds of the Fortezza and are scheduled to start at 21:30 unless otherwise stated. Tickets may be bought in advance from the Town Hall (open Monday—Saturday), and also go on sale at the respective venue an hour before each performance starts.
 

 

Music

6th
 
The Art of Incidental Music — Music for film by Stavros Xarchou. Entrance 15 euros, students 10 euros.
8th Michalis Tzouganakis. Fusion lute virtuoso (Rethymnon meets Belgium) with band. Entrance 17 euros.
10th Stelios Bikakis. Traditional Cretan music with a modern twist. Entrance 15 euros, students 10 euros.
13th Parov Stelar and Band — Jazz and House. Entrance 20 euros, students 10 euros.
17th Aire — Acoustic jazz, flamenco and dance. Entrance 5 euros.
19th Ziryab Trio — Arabic and Turkish music. Entrance 15 euros, students 10 euros.
20th Baroque Sonatas: Spyros Kondos (oboe) and Gerasimos Choïdakis (santouri). Entrance 5 euros. NOTE: This concert takes place in the Ibrahim Han Mosque within the grounds of the Fortezza.
27th Renaissance Era Recital: Aris Graikousis (piano), Despina Tsoukala (soprano). Entrance 5 euros. NOTE: This concert takes place in the Odeio (Nerantze Mosque).
30th Concert by Group Kelsos: Baroque, Renaissance and modern Greek music. Entrance 5 euros. NOTE: This concert takes place in the Ibrahim Han Mosque within the grounds of the Fortezza.
 

Theatre

1st Theatrical Enterprises G Lebesis perform ‘Dad, don’t ever die again on Friday’, by Alexandros Rigas and Dimitris Apostolou - directed by Alexandros Rigas. Entrance 23 euros, students 17 euros.
2nd/3rd ‘The Three Musketeers’ by Alexandre Dumas, directed by Carmen Rougeri. Entrance 12 euros.
9th Athinaion Theatre perform: ‘Plutus’ by Aristophanes, directed by Thimios Karakatsanis. Entrance 23 euros, students 17 euros.
18th Theatre Group: ‘Idaioi Daktyloi’ perform ‘The Master Builder’ by Nikos Kazantzakis, directed by Sophia Filippidou. Entrance free.
21st Athens Contemporary Theatre Group perform ‘Macbeth’ by William Shakespeare, directed by Giorgos Kimoulis. Entrance 20 euros, students 15 euros.
23rd Municipal Theatre of Volos and Theatre Group ‘Attiki Skini’’ perform Ecclesiazusae by Aristophanes, directed by Thanasis Theologis. Entrance 20 euros, students 17 euros.
29th Theatre Company VIVI perform ‘Melissa’ By Nikos Kazantzakis, directed by Tilemachos Moudatsakis. Entrance 15 euros, 10 euros
 

Street Performances by Studio Omma

19th
 
Starting at 19:30, the group will walk from Porto Rethymno Hotel along the beach road, ending up where the Lavyrinthos used to be. They will then perform Orpheus and Eurydice.
26th As above, except the route to be followed—Starts at the Lykeio Ellinidon and ends at Porto Rethymnon Hotel.
28th As above, except the route to be followed– Starts af Four Martyrs Square, proceeds through Old Town via Guora Gate, Platanos and Loggia, and ends at Metropolis Square.
 

Art

9th Opening of exhibition ‘Deconstructing Life’ by art collective Cocun: Photo Therapy Festival. This exhibition is spread over several locations including Xenia (opposite marina), the old Artillery building in the Fortezza and selected art-cafes. Runs until the 18th.
20th
 
‘The Pink Window of Lakkou’ by Kostas Kapetanakis, exhibition showcasing a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, lithographs, ceramics and collage. Old Artillery building in the Fortezza, runs until the 30th.
 

Story Telling

13th & 24th Evening of Folk Tales for Young and Old: Rethymnon Youth Centre. Starts at 19:00, entrance free
 

Other Events

22nd The Holocaust. Memorial event with music and speech commemorating August 1944 in Rethymnnon. Fortezza. Entrance free.
28th Lecture on Giovanni Giustiniana ‘from Candia’ - an eminent intellectual of the Renaissance. Nerantze Mosque. Entrance free.
  Medieval Miriam
