It’s Party Season — AGAIN!

This is the month for THE BIG GREEK Summer holiday — On August 15th, we celebrate the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which is also a National Holiday. You will be able to find out more about this on our Spotlight Page. If previous years are anything to go by, Crete will be incredibly busy during this week. Traditionally this is the time for Greek families to head for the beach—many camping out overnight. The better known beauty spots on the South Coast — such as Elafonisi- are particularly popular and will be chock-a-block. You have been warned!
August is also a great time of year for ‘Panigiri’ - religious festivals - throughout the region more about this on our Spotlight page). We will post details of the major ones in the Rethymnon area as we hear of them on the www.rethymnon.biz website.
The Renaissance Festival in Rethymnon is now in full swing, and you can find a full programme of events on the next page. There are also a number of other Festivals taking place in the Rethymnon Nomos. These include the Cultural Festival of the Municipality of Kouloukona — which this year is dedicated to the firefighters who lost their lives on 11th July; and a series of cultural events in both the Finikas (Plakias) and Syvritos (Amari Valley) regions. Programme highlights may be found on the www.rethymnon.biz website. If you know of an event that you would like to publicise in the Bugle, contact Kate: editor@rethymnonnews.com / KateBrusten@hotmail.com — the deadline for the next issue is 29/08/07

Anapolis Graviera Festival? Perhaps Not

As you will discover in the column below, this page suffers a bit from telling you about Festivals that should have taken place this month…. In the village of Anapolis, up in the hills above Hora Sfakion, traditionally in August there is a Graviera (cheese) festival, which is accompanied by a whole host of cultural and musical events. Sadly, due to a number of recent deaths in the village, it is not clear at the moment whether this festival is going to go ahead. Once we know more, we will update you on the www.rethymnon.biz website.

Wine Festival: End of an Era?

It’s now official, there will be no Rethymnon Wine Festival this year. And, at the moment, it is unclear whether there will ever be another one again. For some of us, this news really represents the end of our extended youth: at least one member of the Bugle Team first attended this event as a ‘wild child’ in 1984. And though she wouldn’t say that the Festival was ‘the thing’ that made her come and live here full-time, it, epitomising the Rethymnon ethos, certainly helped. We wanted to have a little walk down memory lane and share with you our photos and memories of ‘Rethymnon Wine Festivals we have experienced over the years’. But, when we looked through the photos from the last couple of decades, the Wine Festival ones all seemed rather blurred.
As for memory…..Ha!
If this really is the end of an era, then there is just one small drop of comfort to be had: at least it will mean that the Rough Guide will have to update its information so that it bears some resemblance to Rethymnon in the 21st Century. Only joking, chaps!

Nice Site About Minoan Crete

Not just for this month, but for any month, in fact. Our thanks go to Kath Walls for pointing this out to us. From what we can tell, this really has to be the most comprehensive site about Minoan Crete on the Internet:
