Get up, Stand up….
Stand up for your rights! As we reported in a previous edition of the Bugle, local (council) elections will take place in Greece this November. Anybody who is a European citizen and who is also classed as being resident here should be eligible to vote for local elections BUT NOT IN THE NATIONAL ELECTIONS UNLESS YOU ARE GREEK (just to clear that little query up, and yes, we have been asked). Here in Rethymnon the deadline for registering to be able to cast your vote has now been extended until the end of August. You can put yourself on the electoral roll at the Town Hall during normal office hours. According to the latest information we have, in order to register you should take with you a recognized photo ID (passport and / or residence permit), and we would also recommend that bringing along a piece of paper with proof of address (such as a phone bill) might not be a bad idea either (you never know!). Our impression from our dealings with people in the Town Hall is that on balance they are very helpful, and will do their best to ensure that you understand about the various procedures that should be followed.
Crossword Competition: August Leader Board
Once again we say thank you to Trevor and Linda Sanders and Derek Pearce for submitting their entries to our crossword competition this month. This means that Trevor and Linda are now on 35 points, Derek is now on 20 points and Sue remains on 15 points. Our crossword competition goes as follows: Submit your entries to us by the copy deadline and each month we will publish a running tally of top five scorers. At the end of the year, the top scoring contestant(s) will win a meal for two at a restaurant in Rethymnon courtesy of the Bugle. Keep those entries coming. Send it in and win!
Cocktail of the Month: Something Chilly
It’s very nearly August as I type (that deadline is looming!), it’s rather warm, the truck drivers are still on strike and lots of people have run out of petrol. So it’s time to think of a drink that is not going to be too difficult in terms of finding ingredients that are within walking distance. Tough call. Many of your friends will still have some raki left, and many of your friends will also have some chili peppers growing in their back garden - so why not mix the two together? Let’s face it, you may not cool down, but you might fall asleep until the first rains start in the autumn. There are several reasons why you should not actually be doing this. One of the best ones being that a dear friend of ours makes the best chili raki ever so you really don’t want to try and reinvent the wheel. Back to the drawing board then. You will want some strawberries (and yes, they do grow here, but somewhat erratically) ice (this can be done) some soda and we reckon a bit of gin. Oh, and yes, you’re going to top it up with a few drops from that crusty bottle of Angostura Bitters that you bought for that complicated recipe we gave you way back when. Pulp the strawberries (stamp on them if needs be, but not too cruelly), crush the ice add the gin and fizz and whizz!
Music to drink this by? Peter Gabriel....Oh, hang on a minute wasn’t that Solsbury Hill rather than Strawberry Hill?
