Alice Russell
It’s not all about classical music and drama when you go up to see a show at the Fortezza! On 30th July we welcomed British soul singer Alice Russell and ‘her boys’ to Rethymnon. Given the date of the concert and the fact that the editorial team were slightly behind schedule (something to do with all those fantastic happenings that took place last month), we had initially decided with considerable regret that we wouldn’t be able to make it to the gig. But then, in the afternoon, whilst the editor was typing away she heard the sound check. ”If the Bugle is a couple of hours late, so be it!” She cried. “I’m going!” We’re glad that we succumbed to temptation. The concert really gave us a lift. Alice engaged very well with the audience, the show was visually entertaining, and the music got at least some us jumping up and down. Come back soon!
The Band in Police Station Square
For us this experience was one of those ‘it could only happen here’ type of evenings. The night after the Renaissance Festival finished some of the members of the Rethymnon Philharmonic Orchestra put on a free outdoor concert at what we in the ‘hood’ like to call Police Station Square. For those of you who don’t know Rethymnon terribly well, the square is located just off the road that runs round the back of the Fortezza (by the football ground). The square is dominated by a beautiful neo-classical building (currently being restored) which houses amongst other things the county council offices. However, as locals have been pointing out the square has suffered a bit of neglect of late. Time for a bit of TLC! The band were fantastic. We sat there sipping ouzo listening to international classics such as the ‘Girl from Ipanema’ along with some seriously good Greek laïki. Very cool indeed….
26th Vardinogiannea: A Sporting Triumph!
It just gets better every year! With two new Greek Youth records (200m men - Under 23 - and 3000m women, both achieved by members of EAR, the Rethymnon Athletics Club), two meeting records (hammer throw women and 3000m women), and several seasonal bests, the 26th Vardinogiannea International Athletics Meeting once again lived up to its reputation of being one of the primary athletics meetings in Europe. A total of 250 athletes from 32 countries came to the Gallou Stadium just outside Rethymnon to compete in 15 different events. The athletes really pulled it out of the bag and they gave the spectators a most enjoyable evening. Some of the highlights for our roving reporter were the 100m men which needed a photo-finish to decide the winner, the long jump for men - where the Australian Chris Nofke left it to his last jump (8.00m) to win the event and the high jump for women where both the first and second placed competitors winner recorded a seasonal bests – both clearing 1.94m!
And for the first time in its history, the events were also shown on a giant screen, which made it even more entertaining for the spectators. Everybody could see all the track events, with immediate replays. The setting up on the hill with a sea view is just spectacular, and the event is FREE! An absolutely fantastic way to spend a summer’s evening. Roll on next year!
