This Month

Panagia, Panigyri, Art, Music, Theatre and Fun in the Sun!

AugustThe Renaissance Festival may have come to a close, but the cultural extravaganza continues at an incredible pace. It’s yet another blink and you might miss it month. Hopefully the Bugle crew will still manage to make time to chill out and relax, too. On the following pages you will find details of just some of the events scheduled to take place in and around town over the next few weeks, including the programme for the Summer Arts Festival.

August is the big Greek holiday month. Athens empties as everyone heads off to the islands. Don’t expect to have the beach to yourself in the next few weeks! On 15th August the Orthodox Greeks celebrate ‘Panagia’ - which marks the assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. This is an extremely important religious festival in the Greek Orthodox calendar and is also a national holiday. Many villages will be hosting Panigiri (festivals) - the three day festival at Mikri Gonia is one of the better known celebrations in this area. As ever, though, details of these great knees ups are often only available at the last minute. We’ll try and keep you posted online!

Art and Photography Exhibitions

Art and Photography ExhibitionsWe’ve just got enough space to mention a couple of exhibitions here (there will be plenty more, we’re sure!). If you’re quick, there’s still time to catch ‘ΤΣΕΡΚΙ’ the amazing group exhibition currently being hosted at Dourakis Winery (just outside Vrysses). Sculpture, ceramics, jewellery, photography….Highly recommended! Open daily from 7pm - 11pm, entrance free, runs until August 6th. For further information and directions check out the www.dourakiswinery.gr website.

Starting on August 13th (runs until September 10th) a photography exhibition featuring international artists will be taking place at Charoupomylos, Panormo. Open daily from 8pm – 10pm, entrance free. Find out more online at the www.photobiennale.gr or www.panormo.com websites.

Goddess of the Month: Athena

Goddess of the Month: AthenaIn July we had yet another fabulous lunch with hosts Arlette Veltjen and Triantafillos at Restaurant Paradiso in Agia Galini. As regular readers will know, thanks to the initial suggestion made by Arlette earlier this year, this is the place where we put our heads together and try and come up with a deity of the month. For August we’ve chosen Athena. Not terribly original some might say, but this lass still manages to keep you guessing. Despite her name, Athena was Cretan through and through. She was a daughter of Zeus (I know, I know, which Greek goddess wasn’t?!); however the circumstances surrounding her birth are mysterious. Some say that she appeared out of Zeus’s head, which doesn’t sound terribly nice. Moving rapidly on….It is not clear whether Athens is named after Athena or vice versa, but the city has been dedicated to her ever since she won a battle with Poseidon. She is known for being the Goddess of wisdom - often represented symbolically in the form of an owl. Athena is also known as being the Goddess of military strategy, although apparently she wasn’t particularly warlike in nature. When she wasn’t overseeing battles she spent her spare time promoting culture and technology. She taught people how to cultivate olives, how to make ships, weapons and tools, and of course still managed to keep the house clean and cook delicious meals. Told you she was a Cretan woman!
