Recycling in Rethymnon

Recycling in RethymnonAside from using the blue and yellow recycling bins for household waste other items can be recycled as follows:
Broken electrical goods. There is a depot just outside town which will take anything ‘that had a plug on it’ (including washing machines and fridges). Drivers, take the National Road towards Heraklion in Misiria. Turn off the highway after about 100150 metres, hang a right and you should soon see recycling bins etc. The depot is open from 6am to 3pm on weekdays, and from 6am to 12 noon at weekends. For further information call 28310 57940. For large objects that need collection call 195 from any phone.
Telephones / small telecoms items. There is a green bin in the main OTE office on Kontouriotou Street.
Batteries. various places in town including OTE, DEI, Germanos, Marinopoulos and Champion.
Mobile Phones, Ink cartridges: Aside from batteries, Germanos in Market Street (the street you walk down into the Old Town from the Big Gate) will also take ex mobile phones / and spent computer printer ink cartridges.
Old cars. DRAKOS on the left hand side of the National Road a short way out of Rethymnon (going towards Hania) take cars for scrap. They will give you money for spare parts. Phone: 28310 32251.
Used cooking oil: Thanks to Eddy and Wyn and Jack Tomlinson for providing us with updates about this. There are now four containers for used cooking oil in Rethymnon that we know of. Please note that there is no longer one at the entrance to the industrial port, however there is one at the Spar / Halkiadakis supermarket in Kalithea, where you can recycle other items such as used light bulbs. There are another two containers in Kalithea: at Agios Giorgos Church and also in Kapodistriou street. In downtown Rethymnon you will find a container at the South entrance to the municipal park. Just open the lid on the top and pour your used oil into the container. The recycled cooking oil will go towards producing bio-fuel and soap.

If you know of any other recycling outlets, please get in touch with us so we can pass the information on!

Hangovers: Some Healthy Remedies

We say thank you to Uta Wagner, our local nutrition expert for the following article which is really useful at this time of year. Uta writes:

Now the carnival time starts. Up to Clean Monday "Kathari Deftera" there are many celebrations and festivals. Sometimes it might happen that you drink too much alcohol and wake up the next morning with a hangover.

The skull is humming; the blood circulation fluctuates and the stomach rebels. This is due mainly to the increased water and mineral requirements that the body needs for the breakdown of alcohol. To help to overcome the hangover quickly the next morning you can support the body through the proper selection of foods.

Eating something salty compensates for the loss of minerals. Something sharp accelerates the digestion. Then it is recommended to have a hearty and easy to digest breakfast, for example, (whole wheat) bread with cheese, plus some olives and pepperoncini.

Hangover curesTo aid the breakdown of alcohol, the body needs plenty of fluids. Good choices are mineral water or herbal tea from Crete. Apple soda (fizzy apple juice) not only acts against fluid loss, because of its isotonic composition it also acts against mineral deficiency (mix 2 / 3 soda water with 1 / 3 apple juice).

Fructose accelerates the decomposition of alcohol. This is readily available from fresh fruit and honey. Together with some Greek yogurt, this is a perfect blend to complement your breakfast.

Caffeine helps against headaches in combination with acid. The best help is a strong Greek coffee or espresso with a dash of lemon juice.

To regenerate the body needs a lot of oxygen. A walk after breakfast would be ideal - so why not take a stroll on the beach?
