CIC Archaeology Group News

Thanks to Anna Capernaros (CIC VP) for providing us with the following article. Anna writes:
December 7th ‘Knossos – Talk by Don Evely’. In spite of the very heavy rain day the talk was well attended. The President of the Rethymnon Council - Department of Culture and Tourism also came and enjoyed it very much. Accompanying her was the Head of the Rethymnon guides who has also offered to give us a guided tour of Rethymnon during January. The room at the Palazzino di Corina proved to be a bit too small for the number of attendees and lunch was not up to the standard expected. Therefore the next talk will be held at an alternative venue, but also in the centre of Rethymnon. Forthcoming events include a tour of Rethymnon, a talk, a residential course at Knossos and a site visit.
January 19th: Tour of Rethymnon. Our guide will be Ioanna Kalypso Glypti (head of the Rethymnon guides for the Council). Time 11.00 am. Meeting point: by the Catholic Church. This tour will last two hours and the maximum number of participants is 25. Ioanna has offered to repeat the tour if we get more than 25 people. Cost: FREE! However, could all participants make a small donation so that we can at least offer her lunch afterwards. Anyone who wants to come for lunch please let me know nearer the date. Please email me (Anna) by January 9th if you would like to join this tour.
RESIDENTIAL COURSE: The Knossos Experience. Wednesday February 1st – Saturday 4th February.

Programme – provisional and subject to variation depending on weather. Day 1 (Feb 1st), arrive at Knossos around 18.00 – 18.30. Meal at hostel there cooked by Cretan lady. Discussion of arrangements and informal meeting / talk in Library for planning the next days. Day 2 (Feb 2nd), am: visit to Vathypetro, Archanes and other areas to be researched. In the afternoon, Pottery studies 1. Evening: Talk in Library - Looking at Religion. Meal at Hostel (local cooking ).Day 3 (Feb 3rd), morning: visit to Heraklion Museum Temporary Exhibition. Afternoon: Pottery Studies 2. Evening: Talk in Library: Minoan Crafts: How did they make that? Meal at Skalani Taverna (out). Day 4 (Feb 4th) am: Knossos in its Valley. Afternoon: either Pottery Studies 3; or Working in Stone. Dispersal at 17.30 ish. Cost – 250,00E per person which includes everything, i.e. full board and bed, materials. As it is not worth hiring a bus (too expensive for 3 days) it would be cheaper for us to use our own cars for the site visits and there will be no off-road driving so a reduction of 25 euros will be given for the owner of the cars used to go towards covering petrol etc. Only 3 cars would be needed. Registration for the course: Please advise me, Anna, by January 9th
February 22nd: Talk by Don Evely – ‘ A TALE OF TWO ISLANDS’ (Crete and Cyprus) Time 11.30 am.
A tale of two islandsVenue: Kentro Neon (Youth Centre), Rethymnon. This is very close to the church in 4 Martyrs’ Square. Park in the car park and then cross the road towards the church and the taxi station. Pass the church as if heading for Mamalakis supermarket and the entrance to Kentro Neon is a few metres along the road by the ceramics shop. The hall is a good size with plenty of chairs and a stage for Don’s presentation and we will arrange a microphone so that we can all hear his talk. Cost, 5 euros per person. I will invite Don and Georgia to lunch at a local taverna afterward. Anyone who would like to join us is welcome and should let me know nearer the date. Please can those who wish to attend this lecture let me know provisionally at this stage by January 15th. This will give me a good idea of the minimum number for booking the venue (the venue costs 150 euros).
MARCH: Don is in Australia during March so unlikely anything will be arranged for March.
APRIL: GOURNIA. April 6th (overnight) and April 7th Site Visit.
In order to get permission to visit the site Don has to make an application for which he needs the names of those planning to attend before the details can be confirmed. So please can anyone interested in this visit please email me, Anna by January 9th so that I can pass names on to Don for his application process. Names are not binding because the tour is a long way ahead but we need to submit them for the tour to happen. or the course – this is the first one and depending on interest this could be repeated later – so please advise me (Anna) if you would like to register for this course as soon as possible.
