Multi - Cultural Friendship Party, Rethymnon, December 2011

Multi Cultural Friendship PartyAs we reported last month, on 18th December the Municipality of Rethymnon, along with the Department of Culture and the Rethymnon Immigrant Integration Board hosted a multi-cultural friendship party which took place at the ‘Multi Cultural Friendship PartyKentro Neon’ in the centre of town. It was a great evening, which gave children and adults from diverse backgrounds the chance to integrate and learn from each other. And there was even a Santa! The food was brilliant, the music and dancing was fun, and we had a fine party! Many thanks to all those volunteers and local shop - owners who generously donated their time and / or gifts to make this such a special event.

Saint Nicholas Visits the Dutch School in Rethymnon

Saint Nicholas in RethymnonWe give many thanks to Mieke Osenga for her report us about this wonderful event that took palce in December. Mieke writes: On the fourth of December the children of the Dutch school in Rethymnon celebrated the annual Saint Nicholas feast. Saint Nicholas is the main character of the children’s feast which is held each year on December 5th (parcels evening) in the Netherlands and on December 6th (the actual Catholic feast day of St. Nicholas) in Belgium. Saint Nicholas and his helpers, including Black Peter, so the story tells, arrive in the night of 5th December in the Netherlands and on 6th December in Belgium through the chimney into the house to bring gifts for the children living there. However, very often Saint Nicholas will come along to visit the children himself with his helpers. Fortunately he could find some time this year to visit the children of the NTC school “de Taaltent”. Around eleven in the morning the children, all gathered in the schoolyard, welcomed the Saint singing their songs. Entirely in Dutch style, he, accompanied by five of his helpers arrived on a bicycle. In the school the feast continued with traditional Dutch games for the children. The parents had made delicious snacks. Finally, each child was given a beautiful gift from the Saint. Of course we hope that Saint Nicholas will come again next year to visit the children!
