Christmas in Rethymnon

In the Greek Orthodox calendar Easter takes precedence as the main religious festival of the year. Up until relatively recently, Christmas celebrations in Greece were very low key compared to many countries in Europe and the US. Times change of course, and now the Santa coefficient is up there with the rest of them! Twenty years ago, as far as Christmas decorations went, you felt lucky if you could get your hands on a fluorescent inflatable reindeer (we bought two, one yellow, one orange, and fixed the punctures with a bicycle repair kit). Now, it’s tinsel, tinsel, all the way.

In Rethymnon the Chamber of Commerce would appear to be pulling out all the stops to ensure that the town has a lovely time over the festive season.

They have set up a special Christmas Committee and have planned a series of events that will appeal to residents and visitors to the area. According to the local press, the main aim is ‘to provide a loving, attractive and festive atmosphere for children, and for those who want to feel like children’.

From the proposed programme we have seen so far, it looks as if people have been planning the party (which runs for 17th December up until 5th January) since August. So that explains it….

So what’s on offer? Well, just for starters there will be clowns, street theatre, magic shows, face painting, shadow play, a walk with goblins in the park, karaoke (!), a street market, a book exchange for children and Santa’s Happy Train. Santa will be distributing gifts to children (pens, balloons etc) Santa will also be giving out drinks to the adults: ‘raki, tea and honey-raki’. And, in collaboration with the Greek Post Office, a special mail box will be set up for Santa letters.

CIC CHRISTMAS CHARITY BAZAAR, HANIA. This annual event will take place in The Old Customs’ House in Hania Harbour on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th December. Volunteers still needed!
