Internet Connection in Remote Areas via Satellite
If you live in a remote area on Crete and are having problems getting a landline phone connection then internet access may be problematic, perhaps involving long treks into town at inconvenient times to find an internet café that is open. If this is so, then the following option might be worth considering: It is now possible to set up an internet connection - without the need of a telephone line - via satellite. Satellite communications technology has improved considerably in recent years: satellite system manufacturers are now able to produce equipment that is more reliable at handling fast data speeds than was previously the case at reduced overall production costs. The person to talk to about this is Mark Banks, who is based in Vamos, Apokoronos (see the advertisement opposite for contact details). Mark is the regional agent, engineer and technical advisor for Bentley Walker - a well established UK based company who supply satellite systems worldwide. You can find out more about Bentley Walker online by logging on to the
www.bentley-walker.com website.

Mark is refreshingly up-front when he says that whilst costs have come down, internet connection via satellite should not be seen as a cheap quick fix for everyone. The initial outlay – which includes site survey, hardware purchase / installation and technical support is currently in the region of €1,200. The additional annual subscription fee currently stands at €400. So, if you can already access the internet from home via a landline connection, or are likely to be able to in the near future, then ‘internet via satellite’ may not be for you. However, if you are permanently based in a remote area where the standard communications infrastructure is non-existent or poor, then the potential benfits of this type of system are definitely worth investigating!
