Rethymnon CIC Meeting in December: Change of Venue

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - CICThe Rethymnon branch of the Cretan International Community meets on the first Thursday of every month. The December meeting will take place on Thursday 03/12/09 and the January meeting will take place on 07/01/10. Please note that the venue of the meeting has now changed. Starting from Thursday December 3rd onwards, the meeting will take place at the Cafe ‘La Bamba’ in Rethymnon from 11.00 am to 12.30 pm. The cafe will be open from 10.30 am on the meeting day. If you are coming from the centre of Rethymnon, going East, La Bamba (Sof. Venizelou St. 7 - 8 ) is on the beach road between Plateia Agnostou (aka Unknown Soldier Square) and the marina.

Everyone, regardless of membership status is welcome to attend. The CIC meetings are a great way to get to know people from the international community, to exchange news and views, and to find out about up-and-coming local events.

The local coordinator for the Rethymnon branch of the CIC is Anna Capernaros. Anna may be reached on 28310 57305. The President of the CIC is Debra Papadinoff, her contact number is 6938 639823.

You can find further information about the CIC organization itself on the www.thecic.eu website.

Rethymnon Branch of Greek Red Cross: First Aid Courses in January!

Thanks to Bob and Eveleen Wright for the following:
‘Three members of the Samaritas Red Cross rescue team came to the November CIC meeting. Unfortunately “Mare” their one year old Labrador rescue dog could not attend in his full uniform coat, as he had to take his master Konstantinos, head of the Rethymnon team to a rescue dog convention in Patras. His wife kindly explained to us that to become a trained member requires 500 hours of training so that they can deal with fires, earthquakes, aeroplane and road accidents, mountain rescue etc. We were astonished to learn that the Rethymnon team has 150 trained volunteers, with 30 junior cadets coming up (there are similar teams in other towns on the island). Furthermore, they buy their own uniform , boots helmet etc which costs 500 euros!! We got a quick demo with “Ressucie Annie” – the latest CPR regime is two breaths and 30 chest compressions, which showed some of us how out of date we all are.
We have been offered the opportunity to undertake a proper First Aid course with Kosti, a trained CPR instructor in the New Year. Normally this requires 20 hours spread over 4 sessions, at a cost of 35 euros per person. He has suggested the following. If we can get to their “Boot Camp” at Skouloufia, which is about 20km east of Rethymnon, and manage 3 days, i.e. Friday , Saturday and Sunday, (with refreshments provided), the course could be completed.. I believe that there has been interest shown from Hania folk as well as those from Rethymnon. I would be pleased to hear from any one who would be interested in joining this course – you can contact me at bobandev@otenet.gr .
P.S. The course has now been arranged for Friday 22nd. January, Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th. January 2010. This is of course with the proviso that the Samaritas are not called out to a major rescue situation that weekend.
There is a maximum limit of 14 people, and the cost as stated is 35 euros. Each person will need to provide 2 photos and a photocopy of their passport along with their Greek tax no. These will enable successful course members to receive their Red Cross Basic First Aid certificate.”

Here at the Bugle we think this is an absolutely excellent idea and would encourage our readers to sign up ASAP!
