Harbouring a Grudge? |
Where have all the pirates gone? |
During the last couple of weeks we have noticed some pretty drastic
changes taking place in the Venetian Harbour. Parts of the quayside
appear to have disintegrated and some heavy duty machinery has been
mobilized. As of last weekend, the harbour was blocked off at the old
Customs House end, and it looks as if the old harbour wall is being
reconstructed. If this is an emergency measure, then we understand.
However, if this is work that has been in the pipeline for a while, then
we do have a couple of questions regarding the timing of the repairs….!
The first charter of the season is due to land on 15th March, which
doesn’t leave much leeway (!) in terms of tidying up and beautification
in time for visitors to come to one of our major tourist attractions. |
Sporting Update: New Volleyball Coach for Rethymnon |
| After last month’s depressing news about
the performances of the male and female Volleyball teams, it is
heartening to know that that we now have a new Volleyball coach.
According to our in-house sporting pundit, this has already resulted in
some dramatic improvements—the women won their last game , and they are
no longer at the bottom of their table. As for the men? Well,
apparently, they’re still losing ‘but not as badly as before’. |
Methinks this might be a case of the glass
being half-full rather than half-empty, but still, we cross our fingers
and wish both teams well.
The Basketball team, having got to the cup final, seem to have lost the
momentum in their league games—they lost away last week. By the way,
tickets for the Cup Final on March 25th are now on sale at various
locations in Rethymnon e.g. Organosi computer shop in the big pink
building opposite the Agricultural Bank. |
Aster's Rethymnon, our local football team, seem to be going from
strength to strength. They’ve won all their games since the last issue
of CMB, and have moved up to second place in their table. Meanwhile,
Hania are languishing in sixth place….Now that’s a real shame. But
whilst we’re on the subject, Asteras’ next home game is against Hania on
11th February, at 3 p.m. This really might be one worth watching!

Tourist Police Update |
 A room with a view? |
Our piece about the “mystery of the missing tourist police” last month
aroused considerable debate amongst the locals. The general consensus,
now, seems to be that the Tourist Police will move to the Delfini along
with the Port Authority and the Tourist Information Board. But even if
this is the case, they don’t seem to be in much of a hurry to pack! When Luc last walked past, the computers were all still there, and there
wasn’t a cardboard box to be seen. Meanwhile, demolition of the old
Lavyrinthos—the Tourist Police’s current home is proceeding at breakneck
speed.
Let’s hope our local officials don’t find themselves buried under a pile
of rubble!

Swings and Roundabouts:
Taxes and Bus Fares |
|
 |
Our new mayor seems to have taken the bull by the horns in terms of
local financial policy. He has announced that local taxes and water
bills will not rise this year. This, despite the fact that the financial
situation of both the council and the water board are ‘less than
healthy’ to say the least. The mayor has taken charge of the water board
for the next 6 months to try and sort out some of the financial issues
involved. We hope that the Mayor isn’t adopting this policy merely as
a ‘short term sweetener’.
In any case, as we all know, there’s no such thing as a free lunch: The
Minister for Transport and Communications has announced that urban and
long-distance bus fares will rise by 5% on March 1st. |
