The Mediterranean Garden Society—MGS |
Just one of the many beautiful wild flowers that are indigenous to this island.
|
The MGS is a non-profit making association founded in Greece in 1994,
and acts as a worldwide forum for everyone who has a special interest in
the plants and gardens of the Mediterranean climate regions; -found in
the Mediterranean, and parts of Australia, South Africa and California.
The society publishes a quarterly journal with a wide variety of
articles accompanied by delightful black & white drawings. It also
maintains a garden at Sparoza, on a dry hillside in Attica, close to the
new Athens airport. Membership of the Greek branch costs 20 euros per
year. The website is
www.mediterraneangardensociety.org which includes a
notice board for the Greek branch, as well as news of the other branches
around the world. It also gives links to useful specialist garden
centers in Greece and abroad.
The goal of the MGS is to encourage the Mediterranean way of gardening;
the use of drought resistant plants which are native to the
Mediterranean climate, and the careful use of water in the summer
months.
Last year, the Cretan members of the MGS started their own local group,
and two meetings were organized; one at Villa Estia Maroulas, and the
other at the White Mountain Retreat overlooking Souda Bay.
The next meeting of the group will be hosted by Valerie Whittington at
3pm. on Sunday May 6th. 2007 at Pontikorma, Drapanos, Vamos[6978596045],
which is approx. 20 kms east of Xania. Members are encouraged to join in
a plant exchange.
