Bargains Galore! |
Shopping and socialising by the Old Gate |
February is a Sales Month in Rethymnon, so there should be plenty of decent bargains to be had. It is one of the better times of year to go shopping in Rethymnon anyway — before the blistering heat sets in and the tourist masses cram the streets. Shop staff are generally relaxed, and are happy to give plenty of time and attention to their customers.
Bear in mind that shops are starting to clear out winter stock in preparation for the summer season. Now may be one of your last opportunities before October to engage in some genuinely enjoyable retail therapy before the shops become absolutely awash with flip-flops, beach mats, souvenir base-ball caps and sun-cream.

Recipe: Sinful Chocolate Mousse |
|
Key Ingredients
Eggs: between 5 and 9, as many as you dare!
Mix of very dark, plain and milk chocolate: about a block of each.
Cream: around 500ml—NOYNOY all purpose, in 250 ml cartons is good.
Sugar
Pinch of salt
Cointreau |
Method
Melt the chocolate in a bain marie, or a basin placed over a pan
of hot water. Separate the eggs. Add a little sugar to the egg
yolks, and whisk until light and fluffy. Combine the chocolate
with the egg yolk, and add some Cointreau. Whip the cream, then
spoon in to the mix. Add a pinch of salt to the egg whites then
whisk until they form stiff peaks. Fold the egg whites in. Pour
the mousse into glasses, and put into the fridge to set. Perfect
for a romantic splurge!

Rethymnon Shopping Tip
LIDL currently has a great selection of
really good dark chocolate. The one we like best is the
Ecuadorian 70% cocoa, but you might also want to try the Fin Carré Chocolat Noir Superieur

Buying Toys in Rethymnon: Child’s Play? |
 Jack… in a box?
|
Huge thanks to Cath for this one! Buying toys for children of
relatives and friends is tricky at the best of times—and long distance ,
this provides members of the Coffee Morning Bugle Crew with some
additional challenges. Firstly, there is the problem of coming up with
an original gift idea for a child who may be thousands of miles away.
Then, just when you think you’ve cracked that one, there is the question
of availability—can it be found in Rethymnon? Even worse, as one
intrepid shopper will tell you, is working out how to describe your
chosen toy in Greek, given that there may be no literal translation to
be found in any dictionary. We can now tell you that according to one of
the retailers here, the Greek for “Jack-in-the-box” is, er,
“Jack-in-the-box”. Or would be, except they don’t actually exist as a
concept here. So, if all else fails, it may be best to play safe and
stick with Lego. |

Mix the appropriate amounts of vodka and tomato juice. Spice up to taste

of celery and a wedge of lime. And, yes, as a hangover cure, it works.
