Crete Kennels: Christmas Gallery
“Oh what a Christmas…..
The menu (chicken in stock, liver in red wine, tuna, pasta, etc) was enjoyed by all our guests and, thanks to the sunshine, the Boxing Day ‘nature walk’ helped them lose some of the kilos put on over the festivities.
On the nature walk, all our guests made paw prints on sheets of A4 paper, and collected leaves, twigs, and flowers to make a collage of Christmas memories to show their owners.
We took hundreds of photos (it’s our hobby when we have time), some of which are shown here.
We aimed to provide a really fun holiday for the dogs…we hope we succeeded!”
Welcome (Back!) to Nick and Jenny Burley: New Artistic Talent on Crete!
When sculptor Nick Burley left Crete 12 years ago, he knew that one day he would return. Now that dream has become a reality as Nick, now with his wife Jenn, returns to the island.
“We always planned to retire to Crete but recently decided that it retirement just seemed too far in the future…”
Nick had been working from his studio near Penrith in Cumbria but when the site was closed by new owners it seemed the ideal opportunity to make the move back to Crete. It was whilst visiting the ancient sites of Crete that Nick first had the inspiration to carve his own pieces. “There is no better place than Crete to work” he says, “and it certainly beats renovating gravestones in a wet and windy England!”
Nick specialises in hand carved stone work but also likes to experiment with metal and other media. In the last few years Nick has completed a series of humorous carved heads and gargoyles most of which now adorn homes in the UK. Nick now wants to concentrate on Greek and Roman themed pieces always, he says “with a twist”.
“I also hope to earn my daily bread by carving house name signs for the many new homes that have been built throughout the region.”
Nick’s wife Jenn also brings a creative talent to the relationship with her hand made jewellery called ’Stone Age Bling’. Although a qualified Accounting Technician, Jenn has a more artistic side and has been making and selling jewellery for a number of years.
‘Stone Age Bling’ is a range of hand made jewellery made from natural materials including fossils, polished stones, bronze and pottery with an earthy feel.
“We have only been here for a few weeks but the jewellery seems to be very popular with both the locals and tourists. All the pieces are unisex and I am starting to incorporate local materials into my work.”
