Get those hiking boots on! After all the Christmas & New Year food it’s good to get some exercise. What better way to do this than to put your feet into a pair of walking shoes and to explore Crete with its spring colours. Here Albert Van Elst from
www.winterincrete.com tells us about some of the winter walking tours on offer in Rethymnon: “From this winter two tourist agencies have stuck their neck out to offer excursions to the growing number of winter tourists in Rethymnon. Hopefully we will soon be able to expand our program, but as we say "nothing venture, nothing gain". From December 2008 we started two guided walking tours. Tour #1 takes in the well known
Imbros Gorge which is on the eastern slopes of the Lefka Ori mountain range. This walk is 8 km and takes about 3 hours walking at a slow pace. It's quite an impressive gorge, and has four small stone ‘gates’. On Tour #2 we go to the
St. Anthony Gorge, which is well known by the locals, but not by many tourists or foreign hikers. This gorge is situated in the Amari valley; we start the walk halfway down and then continue along the valley. The
walks are for tourists and locals alike. They take place twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. Transfer by minibus and a guide is included. We extend the tour to make it a full day by continuing to show you the area by minibus and we organise a Cretan lunch in a village.
There is a special offer for Bugle readers, 10 % discount on the price of 30
Euros per person. Lunch not included. For more information call 2831056641 or come to Tourist Services on the beach road or log on to the
www.winterincrete.com website.”
Eco Corner
Thanks to Anna Capernaros for providing us with this great idea: Anna writes: ‘Following on from the recycling information that has been given in previous issues of the Bugle, each month we will be publishing suggestions for eco friendly alternatives to commonly used cleaning and health and beauty products using natural products readily available in most store cupboards which have not been tested on animals. Let's save the planet and money too!! Feedback is requested as we have not tested all of these out yet (and we do not guarantee the results!), and please feel free to submit any of your own tips.
This month’s tip is for an all purpose cleaner: Mix ½ cup of vinegar and ½ cup
of baking soda into 2 litres of water. Store and keep. Use for removal of water deposit stains on shower panels, bathroom chrome fittings, windows, bathroom mirrors etc.”
Where Can I Recycle Waste Items?
Apart from the blue and yellow recycling bins for household waste other items can be recycled as follows :
Disposal of broken electrical goods. There is a depot just outside town which will take anything ‘that had a plug on it’ (including washing machines and fridges). Drivers, take the National Road towards Heraklion in Misiria. Turn off the highway after about 100—150 metres, hang a right and you should soon see recycling bins etc. The depot is open from 6am to 3pm on weekdays, and from 6am to 12 noon at weekends. For further information call 28310 57940. For large objects that need collection call 195 from any phone.
Old telephones and small telecoms items: There is a green bin in the entrance of the main OTE office..
Batteries: various places in town including OTE, DEI, Germanos, Marinopoulos and Champion.
Old cars: DRAKOS on the left hand side of the National Road a short way out of Rethymnon. They even pay you as they recycle the spares and give you a paper for tax purposes!
