Friends of Animals Bazaar Re-Run: It was Hot!

AKA Nora Batty

As reported in last month’s Bugle, the Spring Bazaar for Friends of the Animals on Saturday 19th May in the park suffered from unseasonably soggy weather. Stallholders tried to carry on for as long as possible, but at the point when the water had risen up to our knees and the ducks were paddling past, we had to call it a day. Weather note: For those interested (and even for those who are not), and don’t already know, Saturday, 19th May 1990 was a very fine day in Oxford. However, there was a marquee just in case, the speeches were just great (short) we cut the cake with a samurai sword and we’re still both wearing the wedding rings.
A re-run was held on 23rd June, and, wouldn’t you just know it, this managed to coincide with the beginning of the heat wave! Still, we all did our best to keep cool. Our DJ kept us entertained with classic tunes and Anna and Denise bravely soldiered on making bacon sandwiches. Interesting nutritional discovery: Bacon sandwiches appear to be a universal cure-all (pardon the pun, folks) and surprisingly good at staving off heat-stroke, especially if put on white bread and accompanied by HP Sauce. No ex-pat stereotypes there, then! Considering the heat, it was a good turn out, and thanks to all who made the effort to come and give their support. Friends of Animals would also like to say a big thank-you to all those who volunteered to help out—both beforehand and on the actual day itself. As we went to press, the final tally had yet to be calculated, but it is estimated that the total raised will amount to about 2,300 euros.

Breast Cancer Support Group

Chris Parnassus, who is herself a breast cancer survivor, would be interested to hear from anyone interested in joining a breast cancer support / awareness group. She was member of a group in Athens and found it to be very helpful. You can contact Chris via email at cparnassus@hotmail.com or phone 6977559644

Singing for Fun!

Chris would also be interested to hear from anyone who would be interested in joining a singing group — to sing oldies, gospel tunes and/or songs from musicals, just for fun. And is there a piano player out there who would like to act as accompanist? We know that there is a choral group in Agios Nikolaos, but this is a bit far for those of us who live on the Western side of the island to travel.

Cretan International Community Summer Meetings

The Rethymnon branch of the Cretan International Community meets on the first Thursday of every month at SVEA ’s Konditori, Kapetan Lemonia 3, Rethymnon from 11 a.m. The local coordinator for the Rethymnon branch of the CIC is Anna Capernaros. Please contact her for details of upcoming CIC events and for any membership queries that you may have. Anna may be reached on 28310 57305. Further information about the CIC organization itself may be found on the www.thecic.eu website.

Throughout the summer there will be additional ‘chat and swim’ meetings at Camping Elizabeth on the third Thursday of every month. from 2 p.m. onwards, general assembly point campsite taverna—which is a good place to have lunch. Camping Elizabeth is on the beach at Missiria, a few kilometres east of Rethymnon (just past Perivolia on the Old Road). The beach is ‘wild’ (!) so you might want to bring your own beach mats / umbrellas.
