Enterprising Locals

Promoting Business Ventures in the Rethymnon Region

As you can see, this month we have added a couple more pages to the Coffee Morning Bugle. Our new ’Enterprising Locals’ section has been created firstly so that we can provide additional advertising space without reducing editorial content. Secondly, and more importantly, we hope that people will use this page to pass on their experiences of living and working on Crete — and that in time we will be able to build up a useful reference bank of Cretan entrepreneurial ’tips, strategies and pitfalls’!

To advertise in the Bugle: Our current advertising rates range from €10 per month for small ads (up to one eighth of a page) to €80 for a full page spread. These rates are negotiable if the advertisement is accompanied by a ‘business feature’ which provides information of general benefit to other readers. To book advertising space or to discuss feature content, contact Kate by emailing editor@rethymnonnews.com / KateBrusten@hotmail.com or telephone 28310 54594 / 6942635515.

Kimberley and Peter: Crete Kennels

Kimberley and Peter moved from England to set up a Boarding Kennels in Crete– surprise, surprise, it will be called Crete Kennels, based just 11km from Rethymnon 500 m from the main Spili road and the Rethymnon Brewery! After twelve months of searching for the right site and a total of two years research and planning needed to ensure that they build good boarding kennels, they are close (?) to completion. Because of the site they have chosen, amongst the trees for shade, they have had to go through all sort of bureaucratic hoops with the Forestry, Veterinary and Planning authorities. And, just as in England, Cretan bureaucracy brings with it delays and obstacles such as new rules to cope with. What they do find different is the concept of taking time off for name days—here, rather than celebrating birthdays, people celebrate on their Saint’s name day (just about everybody is named after a Saint) It always seems to be somebody’s name day!

Hopefully, they will be able take possession in July, ready to open in September. The place has to be absolutely be right for the dogs before they take any bookings. Since moving here on 1st April (a good day to choose ?) they have spent the past 13 weeks moving tons of soil and stones (by hand). They have done this to create an ideal setting amongst the shade of the trees where they can walk, sit, play and talk to the dogs in their care. They have allocated 7,300 sq metres of land, which is securely fenced, purely for the dogs’ use. Kimberley and Peter believe that it’s the finer points which will make the difference : they will limit occupancy to 10 dogs maximum, so that they can give truly personalised care, they have security fencing and lighting for the safety of the dogs, and have planned a strict hygiene routine to be incorporated as part of the whole set-up, and they will be living right next to the kennels. Along with their own kennels and runs, the dogs have a kitchen and store set aside just for the preparation of their food, with individual dietary requests catered for. Once they are completely ready, Kimberley and Peter have promised to invite the editorial team of the CMB to inspect the new premises, so watch this space! In the meantime, we wish them both the best of luck.
