Renaissance Festival Programme

July Highlights

Since 1987 the municipality of Rethymnon has organised a festival celebrating the creative arts which takes place during the summer months, the overall theme of the festival being Cretan and European Renaissance. A variety of cultural activities take place during the festival months; these include theatre, music, dance and visual art.  The 21st Rethymnon Renaissance Festival started on 29th June, and will run until the middle of September. The official programme may now be found online at the official Renaissance Festival website — www.rfr.gr — in Greek, and at www.rethymnon.biz in English (When we went to the Town Hall the hard copy ‘glossy’ programmes were not ready yet, but they should be available soon). This year, once again the festival organisers have worked hard to provide us all with a varied series of performances and exhibitions. Here on this page you will find the current schedule for July—events take place in the Erofili amphitheatre within the walls of the Fortezza unless otherwise stated. Obviously, it is worth double checking times and venues ahead of time—there are occasional changes and cancellations. On the plus side, though, from previous experience, additional events are often incorporated into the programme at the last minute, so keep checking the websites and look out for posters and flyers around town. Finally, remember, this is Crete, so you shouldn’t be surprised if performances don’t always start on time!
