Festivals, Exhibitions and Tournaments! |
| As we reported in our last issue, on the ‘entertaining
happenings front’ June was a pretty quiet month for Rethymnon. It turns out that this was
possibly no bad thing, because it gave us all a chance to draw breath. The July calendar is
jam-packed with events in the Rethymnon region. The annual Renaissance Festival gets under
way in earnest—you will find July highlights listed overleaf. There are also several
mini-festivals, exhibitions, shows and tournaments taking place this month—so plenty going
on to keep us all occupied. Unfortunately, we still have no word about whether the wine
festival is going to take place this year, July / August is now looking increasingly unlikely,
though September may still be possible. Once we know more, we will update you on the
www.rethymnon.biz website. As ever, if you know of an event that you would like publicised,
you can contact us by emailing editor@rethymnonnews.com or
KateBrusten@hotmail.com — deadline for the next issue is 26/07/07. |

July 11th is World Population Day. Each year the United Nation
Population Fund (UNFPA) focuses on a specific topic relating to
population and development issues. This year the focus is on gender
and reproductive health, the message being that “men’s involvement
and participation can make all the difference in women’s lives.” In
the sidebar on the right you see copies of posters designed by UNFPA
showing how men can contribute as partners in reproductive health.

Rethymnon Centre for Drug Abuse Prevention: Exhibition and Show
July 11th would seem to be a busy day. According to the local press, the Rethymnon Centre for
Drugs Prevention will be organizing two events, both of which are due to take place outside the
Lykeio Ellinidon building (on the beach front, near the Old Harbour). From 8pm, several stands
will be staffed by professionals from a variety of organizations involved with drug related issues,
and they will be providing information on several topics relating to drug abuse. At 9pm a performance
by the group Chaïnedes is scheduled: this is billed as being a show of ‘entertainment, laughter and
dance’.
Now, from looking at the programme for the Renaissance Festival overleaf, it can be seen that
following their street procession, the theatre group Studio Omma are also timetabled to perform
Orpheus and Eurydice outside the Lykeio Ellenidon. It is hoped that both groups have already been in
consultation with each other, and that the two performances will be dovetailed. However, we will be
keep our eyes open for programme changes and provide updated details as appropriate on the
www.rethymnon.biz website.
