Crete Kennels: Keeping Cool
Peter and Kimberley write “So, as coastal Crete gets hotter and hotter this summer we are really appreciating the ‘coolness’ that comes with being 1050 ft above sea level up here in Crete Kennels at Armeni.
Even so, it is still far too hot to play the usual ball games with the dogs during the day. When Peter tries to get a ball game started, our guests look at him as if he is mad (?). At the moment mid-day play usually means sitting under one of the many oak trees just relaxing and chilling out.
However, this is not to say that we are being idle. Far from it. And when the heat is on, this just encourages us to think of new ways to entertain our guests. So, by special request, we have just had a special package arrive from Sweden (via back pack through customs) – it’s a 3 part wooden ‘activity centre’ for all types of dogs!

Under the shade of the trees , we have tested the ‘ intelligence’ of each dog by placing a treat in each centre of each of the wooden puzzles and seeing how long it takes for each one to ‘suss’ out the game. We’ve tried this out on all the dogs except Rupert and Jacob, who are big enough to toss the puzzles into the air and then get the treat anyway! Peter says: PS: Our own blonde (Kimberley) was having trouble with the intelligence bit ! (Ed: surely not!).
Finally, don’t forget that August is high season as far as ‘Greek summer holiday time’ is concerned, and is a very busy time of year for Crete Kennels. So, to avoid disappointment, please book as soon as possible if you are going to need us next month.”
Canine Tip of the Month
As it’s too hot to run around, you may find that your dogs are getting bored. And when dogs are bored they can cause ‘destruction problems’ in the house and garden. To avoid this, why not make a home-made hide and seek game for your dogs!
