Music, Theatre, Art, Dance….
After the relatively ‘quiet’ month of June (and no, June wasn’t quiet for us at all, in case you were wondering), July kicks up a storm on the entertainment front. The really big happening in town this month, of course, is the Rethymnon Renaissance Festival, which takes place from the 12th to the 22nd July - we have provided you with programme highlights on the following page.
Aside from the Renaissance Festival, it’s a case of ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ or ‘just how much can you pack into one day?’ in terms of fun to be had in and around town. Sport, art, music, theatre and dance...it’s all happening here in Rethymnon! Our roving reporters are here, there and everywhere at the moment (zing, bing, perzing, crash, oops, mind that chandelier, watch that dinner set and please don’t try and ski down the ice sculpture) giving their very all to bring you entertaining tales of the unexpected and not so unexpected. Even with our team of dedicated and certifiable reporters we can’t cover every thing, but we do hope that we have managed to give you a taster of what’s on offer entertainment - wise on Crete in this month’s edition of the Bugle .
It isn’t always about fun in the sun, of course. July 11th is World Population Day. The theme of this year’s UN sponsored initiative is: ‘Fight poverty –Educate Girls’ which runs in parallel with the message that ’Investing in Women is a Smart Choice’. The editor doesn’t generally bang the drum in the Bugle as far as socio/political issues are concerned (different sections of the orchestra perhaps?) However, she would ask that readers that have access to the internet take the time to log on to the
www.unfpa.org/wpd/2009/en/
site to find out more about this initiative.
If you know of an event taking place that you would like to see publicised, please get in touch with us!. You will find our contact details and copy deadlines at the bottom of this page.
Yakinthia Festival in Anogia, 24th July - 2nd August: ‘Shepherds of the Mediterranean’
Just as the Rethymnon Renaissance Festival finishes, the Yakinthia Festival - which takes place in the mountain village of Anogia - begins. The Annual Yakinthia Festival is less well known internationally than the Rethymnon Renaissance Festival and is a different type of festival altogether in terms of scale and overall theme, but nonetheless, it is probably equally important as a cultural event.
The focus of the Yakinthia Festival 2009 is on the integral role of stockbreeders as contributors to the social and economic fabric of Mediterranean communities throughout the centuries. It is an international and multi faceted Festival, bringing together people from all corners of the Mediterranean - and at the Festival there will be representatives from many disparate locations including Crete, Corsica, Portugal, Spain, Mali and Turkey….
So what’s happening at the Festival? Well, At Yakinthia 2009 you will be able to witness different sheep-shearing techniques, learn how cheese is made in different countries (and sample international delicacies), go and see several art exhibitions, attend seminars, listen to Portuguese Fado and Tuareg songs from the desert, see some of the finest folk dancing in the world, learn about traditional arts and crafts and much more. For further information see the
www.yakinthia.com website.
