Thursday is Sales Day!

Thursday is Sales DayFor some time now, Thursday in Rethymnon has been ‘hunt the market’ day. As our regular readers will know, the ‘what is going to happen to the market’ has been one of our better long running local soap operas. For those of you who are wondering, currently the best place to start looking for the market is at the car park by the Four Martyrs’ Square. And being that Thursday is still market day, and that this brings in people to town from surrounding areas and that some might say that there is a little bit of a financial crisis here, a number of local traders have also made Thursday a ‘sales day’. How much this is officially condoned is anyone’s guess (!), but in recent weeks we have noticed several shops promoting discounts on a Thursday. A good day to browse for bargains - and if you’re not in the mood for the beach, it’s worth remembering that most of the shops are air conditioned, too!

Recipe: Ceviche. With or Without Raw Fish

Reicpe: CevicheIt’s July and it’s hot. Well, actually, as I’m typing this it is still June and whilst it is still pretty hot it’s not as hot as it will be, but you get the general idea. So chez Maison Bugle we were trying to think of a really cool recipe. ‘What about shredded chicken salad oriental style’? le / la commis chef thought to him / herself. Great! Except for the fact that we did that one last July. And now we’re running out of recipes (send in some ideas!). We could have given you the ‘steak and kidney pudding’ one but a) by any stretch of the imagination anything that involves boiling in the bag is not cool, b) as the editor discovered when she was twelve years old, steak and kidney pudding is not exactly her forte. - It’s a long story which possibly involves Cyprus…. Back to the ceviche. Because we are responsible citizens (and far more importantly because we do not want to be sued) we do not insist on using raw swimming type livestock for this recipe. However, if you are going to use fish for this dish we would suggest that you do not choose shark or anchovies. Anyway, let’s cut to the chase.

Ingredients / Method / Discussion

You will need lots and lots of tomatoes. In Rethymnon right now, finding tomatoes is not going to be a problem. Most of your friends who have any outdoor space whatsoever (and we do include window boxes) are likely to be growing tomatoes, even if they don’t know that they are growing tomatoes. Enough said. You’ll want heaps of garlic, too. Most of your friends may not be growing garlic, but finding it should not be a problem either. Flat leafed coriander is also a good idea, as is lovage. ‘What the flaming heck is lovage?’ I hear some of you cry (and we didn’t know what it was until recently). Well, it’s that stuff that looks like flat leafed parsley (or flat leafed coriander even) and smells like celery. A posh herb in England, grows everywhere here. A fresh lime is good, too. If you can’t find a fresh lime a green lemon will do. Juice the tomatoes. Mix in with the garlic, herbs, lime / lemon and the usual seasoning. If you are adding fish, the acid from the lime / lemon is supposed to sort of cook it. If you are not using fish you can add some tequila and ice cubes and drink the sauce (you’ll find another tequila recipe below). Surprisingly tasty and refreshing!

Cocktail of the Month: ‘Tequila Blue Balls’

Cocktail of the Month - Tequila Blue BallsThanks to our friend Debra for giving us this topical cocktail recipe, which one way or another should fit in with pretty much any sporting final that is likely to take place this month. Some team somewhere is going to have blue balls or new balls. World Cup anything for example? But we’re actually hanging out for the International Tiddlywinks Championships. Fifteen love, we predict. Enough of the seriously dodgy punditry. Here is what you need for the drink: Tequila, blue curaçao, sour mix (though at a pinch some lime will do) and ice. Mix together and enjoy!

Music to drink this by? So many possibilities, but we’re going with Jerry Lee Lewis and ‘Great Balls of Fire’.
