Festival Time!
We’ve just about managed to take a breath after the Wine Festival (which we really enjoyed), and now we’re gearing ourselves up to get ready for the Renaissance Festival which will start just after the World Cup finishes (girly editor is not going to make any girly comments in this paragraph about football, though, as you might discover when you read through this edition she has said some things relating to sport. Jolly hockey sticks!) Festivals, festivals, festivals! As we say every month, there is just so much fun to be had in this town! You’ll find details of the Renaissance Festival programme highlights on the next page.
Once the Renaissance Festival is over, we will then have our generic Summer Arts Festival (which will run until September) featuring a number of touring theatre companies and some high quality Cretan musicians. Details have yet to be confirmed - we’ll let you know more when we get more information. Check out the
www.rethymnon.biz website for updates!
God of the Month: Adonis
As ever, huge thanks to Arlette Veltjen (and partner Triantafillos) from Restaurant Paradiso in Agia Galini for giving us the idea for the Bugle’s God of the Month (and, oh, yes, lunch was fantastic, yet again!). So, Adonis. Well, Adonis might be a bit of a cheat, because it’s not entirely clear that he started out by being a God. And it will come as no surprise to many of you to hear that as usual Aphrodite complicated things. Aphrodite, in a fit of jealous spite, made Myrra fall in love with her father (Myrra’s father, that is). It took a while for Myrra’s father to realize that he was committing incest. But once the penny had dropped he set about trying to kill his daughter. Whereupon she ran away and turned into a myrtle bush. And gave birth to Adonis. Aphrodite came back, took Adonis and gave him to Persephone, so that Persephone could act as nanny. But Persephone fell in love with him, as did Aphrodite. Some bitch fighting ensued, and eventually Zeus intervened. Zeus decided that the best way to sort this out was to let Adonis spend a bit of time with Persephone, a bit of time with Aphrodite and a bit of time doing his own thing (some of us might say that only a bloke would make that type of decision, but there you go). All well and good until Adonis was fatally wounded by a wild boar. Aphrodite cried heaps and begged for Adonis to be allowed to the ‘Upper World’. Which is why Adonis was made the God of vegetables.
