Odysseas the Cyclist: Summer Programme

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - Odysseas the CyclistOdysseas, the amputee cycling champion, paralympic athlete and social activist - who we profiled in our July 2007 issue - has now finalised his summer 2008 programme of guided bicycle tours in the Rethymnon region. Cycling is a great way to explore some of the lesser known parts of the region. Odysseas, who is proficient in English, is passionate about the natural beauty and wildlife of Crete and also has a wealth of knowledge about the history of the island.

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - Odysseas the CyclistTours range from beginner’s level (suitable for all ages) to advanced and can be tailored to suit individual needs.

Areas covered by tours include: Ancient and Byzantine sites such as Eleftherna, Lappa and Arkadi and areas of outstanding natural beauty such as Argiroupoli Springs, Kortaliotou Gorge and Preveli. A support car accompanies all tours so that those who need to take a breather along the way can do so!

Contact details for Odysseas are: A. Velihoti 31 (Beach Road), Rethymnon 74100
Phone: 28310 58178 / 6948279506, email: odyseasthecyclist@hotmail.com / Odyseascyclist@ret.forthnet.gr
You can also find further details about the summer programme on the www.rethymnon.biz website.

Volunteering in Rethymnon: New Website

The Association of Rethymnon Volunteers meets every Tuesday evening at The Centre for Cretan Folk Art. This group brings together a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds who are interested in contributing to the local community. There are many ways in which people of all ages and nationalities can contribute — some of which may not be immediately obvious.

To find out more about volunteering opportunities in the Rethymnon region, contact Manolis Kallergis on 28310 88278. The Association now has its own website (in Greek only): www.ethelo.gr which provides information about the background history and ethos of the organisation, gives profiles of association members and also provides details of up and coming community events.

Recipe: Prawns in Salsa

Ingredients:

Prawns
A jar of salsa
And if you want to push the boat out, a squidge of lime and a sprig of fresh coriander.

That’s it, and now your celebrity chef is going to lie down on a beach chair on the South Coast and contemplate the Libyan Sea. ‘Contemplate the Libyan Sea’? What does that mean? To be there is to understand. Clue: Celebrity chef on beach chair is West of the Joni Mitchell Experience (Matala, in the Heraklion Nomos) and less fried; prawns won’t be fried if you’ve got any sense for this recipe - nothing against fried prawns you understand (remember the controversial saying ‘some of my best friends are fried prawns’) - but not for this dish. By now some of you may be wondering whether the editor is clutching at straws (not needed for this recipe but see cocktail below) in terms of filling column space. Not a bit of it. Let patience be your watchword, and at the very least, you should end up with a pretty picture of shellfish from ‘free to use’ clipart somewhere in the next text box.

Rationale:

It is June, getting hotter by the day and you are about to host one of the first barbecues of the season. The night before, being exceptionally organised in terms of ‘let’s prepare as much as we can in advance’ you have tried to make potato salad. Memory being what it is (or what it isn’t, in this case) you have forgotten previous advice about the sneakiness of Cretan potatoes (see recipes from August and October 2007 in the archive section) and have once again ended up with a mountain of skordalia (Greek garlic dip) instead.

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - P(r)awns in Salse

So maybe I can’t spell….

All well and good, but this may have left you wondering whether you are one salad short of a picnic, so to speak. Prawns in salsa to the rescue! Some of the eagle-eyed among you may be saying ‘But didn’t you mention prawns in salsa in the same context as potato salad last year?’ Well, yes. But we never gave you the actual recipe (such as it is!). It’s quick, easy, different, and very popular at parties….

Cocktail of the Month: ‘Moon Juice’

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - Moon JuiceSome of you may recall the ancient proverb: ‘The moon in June is not a balloon’. Many of you, on the other hand, will not. Well if you drink enough of these, soon you will be seeing moons and balloons (not to mention stars, little green men and spaceships) all over the place.

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - Moon JuiceFor your Moon Juice you will need:

1 part Vodka, 1 part Southern Comfort, 1 part Cointreau, 1 part Pear Schnapps, Orange Juice, ice. In a pint glass, add one shot of each of the spirits and top up with ice and orange juice (or if you are feeling particularly brutal an orange ‘Bacardi Breezer’ can be substituted for the juice, apparently).

Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
