Feast of Klidonas and Navy Week
Compared to other months, June is traditionally a fairly quiet month on the events front in Rethymnon. Town takes a bit of a
breather whilst it gears up for the summer programme of cultural and sporting events that start in July. However, this does not mean
that nothing is happening! A ‘quiet’ month in Rethymnon would be considered to be a very lively one in many other parts of the world.
As ever in Rethymnon, many events such as outdoor concerts and theatrical performances tend to be publicised at the last minute
(difficult to promote ahead of time when you are producing a monthly publication!). So, keep looking out for fly posters around town,
and also check out the events section and forum on the
www.rethymnon.biz website.
Traditional celebrations for this region in June include the Feast of Klidonas (John the Baptist) on June 24th and Navy Week towards the end of the month. As yet we have not received details of events for Navy Week, we will post them online as we receive them.
On Wednesday 4th June, from 7pm, there will be an event promoting regional organic products in the Municipal Park.
On Sunday 22nd June at the Odeio in Rethymnon there will be a Piano Recital by Efrosinis Ktistaki, composer and professor at the
Rethymnon Music School. The performance will include works from Beethoven, Chatchaturjan, Scarlatti, Kodalys and some of her own
compositions. The recital, on World Music Day, is dedicated to the Battle of Crete. The concert is organised by the Municipality and
the Prefecture. Starts at 8.30pm
If you know of an event that you would like to see publicised in the Bugle please contact Kate Brusten by phone on
28310 54594 / 6942635525 or by emailing editor@rethymnonnews.com — the deadline for the next issue is 24/05/2008.
June 5th, World Environment Day

June 5th is World Environment Day, which comes under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme. The slogan for this
year is ‘Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy.’ The United Nations is asking countries, companies and communities to focus on
ways in which greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced. World Environment Day will highlight initiatives and resources that promote
low carbon lifestyles. This year the host country is New Zealand, you can find out more about World Environment Day and international
events that have been planned from the
www.unep.org website. Several towns in Greece have organised events to mark World Environment
Day; unfortunately though, by the time we were going to press we had not found any details of happenings in the Rethymnon area.
June 21st, Summer Solstice Barbecue at Camping Elizabeth
Well it's that time of the year again! This year Solstice Day falls neatly on a Saturday - so come along and eat and drink and
watch the sunset in good company. The Barbecue starts at 7pm, food and drink is on a ‘pay as you go’ basis from the barbecue menu,
and vegetarian options are available. To get to the campsite go east along the "old" coast road from Rethymnon centre - and pass the
turn off for the motorway and look for the signs for the campsite - and turn left where indicated. Everyone welcome!
If further information is required call Anna 28310 57305 or the campsite 28310 28694. See you there!
Looking Ahead: Volunteers Needed for Renaissance Festival in July
Every summer Rethymnon hosts a series of cultural and music events as part of its Renaissance Festival. This summer, certain
changes are afoot. What used to be called the Renaissance Festival will now be known as the ‘Summer Festival’ with events from July
to September, and there will now be an additional Renaissance Festival which will run from July 5th to July 23rd. This festival will
consist of music, theatre and dance from the Renaissance involving performers from all over Europe and the Balkans. We will be
publishing a full programme of events in the July issue of the Bugle. The Festival Committee is looking for volunteers to act as
escorts for the international performers during their stay here. For further information contact Eva Smith via email
eva.d.smith@gmail.com or phone 6979775400.
Calling Young Artists! The Festival Committee is looking for young artists and writers from the international community aged
between 5 and 16 to produce pieces for the Festival, based on the theme ‘The culture or environment you love’. Children can use any
medium, and this is not a contest, all work submitted will be displayed. To find out more, contact Eva Smith, contact details as
above.
