Be Nice to Turtles!
Here is our annual plea for people to be aware of local turtle conservation issues when enjoying the beach this summer. Between June and August loggerhead sea turtles - caretta caretta - return to the beaches where they were born to lay their eggs, with newborns hatching after about 55 days. The beaches around the Rethymnon area are some of the last remaining nesting sites in the Mediterranean for this critically endangered species. If you come across a protected nest on the beach -
generally enclosed by metal frames and clearly marked– please don’t disturb it. Also, please dispose of rubbish particularly carefully, plastic bags and bottles are a particular hazard as the sea turtles mistake them for jelly fish. Finally, if you are lucky enough to see a baby turtle making its first journey from the sand into the sea, please don’t touch it. ARCHELON: The Sea Turtle Protection of Greece, carries out a number of conservation initiatives in the Rethymnon area. You can find out more about their work on the
www.archelon.gr website, and also in our feature in the
August 2008 edition of the Bugle. During the summer, Archelon usually have an information stand on the beach road staffed by volunteers. Another organisation working in the same field is MEDASSET (the Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles). You can find out more about their work on the
www.medasset.org website.
Friends of Animals May Bazaar - Update
In May, Friends of Animals Rethymno (FAR) hosted their spring bazaar in Pigi Village Square. It was a very hot day, and perhaps not as well attended as in previous years, but still, several hundred Euros were raised for local animal welfare. As we were going to press the total amount had yet to be calculated - we will updated you with this when we get the details. FAR now have a new charity shop in Pigi. The current opening hours for the shop are Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 2pm and 7pm to 9.30pm. Volunteers to help staff the shop are desperately needed. Please, if you can spare a few hours to help out in the shop, get in touch with Clodagh on 6945170226 or pass by the shop during opening hours. And, of course, donations to the shop (clothes in good condition, household goods, DVDs, books, bric-a-brac etc.) are always welcome). You can find out more about the work of Friends of Animals on the
www.animals.rethymnon.org website.
Red Cross Coffee and Cake Morning: 650 Euros raised!

The ‘Coffee and Cake Morning’ hosted by Bob and Eveleen Wright in Maroulas on 17th May in aid of the Rethymnon Branch of the Greek Red Cross raised 650 Euros. Fantastic! It was a highly enjoyable morning in a relaxed and convivial environment. There were plenty of lovely homemade cakes to taste, and it was a good opportunity to catch up with friends and to meet local representatives of the charity. The money that was raised will go directly towards helping disadvantaged people in the Rethymnon area. Many thanks to all those who supported this great event.
Celebrating World Belly Dance Day
On May 9th we celebrated World Belly Dance Day in fine style. Natalia Tsoura - local oriental dance specialist - and her dance group Kyveli put on a marvellous show at the Byzantio Hotel in the Old Town in Rethymnon, in aid of cyclists with disabilities. The Byzantio is a Venetian building which has been beautifully restored and was the perfect setting to enjoy this ancient and beautiful art form.
Along with music and dance, we were also able to sample a selection of oriental mezes prepared by members of the group. As you can see from the photographs it was a fantastic evening!
Belly dance is becoming increasingly popular on Crete. You can find out more about its history and the work of Natalia Tsoura in the September 2007 issue of the Bugle. For more up to date information about performances, classes and local contacts see also the
www.bellydancecrete.com website.
