This Month

Marvellous Midsummer!

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - Venetian HarbourIn terms of organised events, June tends to be one of the quieter months in Rethymnon. The Wine Festival has just finished and town is gearing up for the Renaissance Festival in July. As we’ve said many times before, a ‘quiet’ month here isn’t really ‘quiet’, though. There’s still plenty of entertainment to be had in and around town. The open air restaurants and summer music venues are now up and running for the season. And it’s a great month for getting out and about and enjoying the great outdoors before the temperatures skyrocket and the hordes of tourists descend.

June 5th is World Environment Day. This year the host country is Mexico, and the theme is “Your Planet Needs You. UN-ITE to combat climate change”. You can find out more about this online at the www.unep.org/wed website.

Throughout June there will almost certainly be a number of theatrical and musical performances staged in Rethymnon. But, as ever, they will probably only be publicized at the last minute, so keep looking out for fly posters around town and check out the www.rethymnon.biz website and our Facebook group (see Community Page for details about this) for updates. If you know of an event taking place that you would like to see publicized, please get in touch with us. To contact the Bugle, telephone Kate Brusten on 28310 54594 / 6942635515, or email editor@rethymonnnews.com – the deadline for the next issue is 22/06/2009.

And Now We are 30! The Bugle Celebrates

Rethymnon Coffee Morning BugleThis month we are blowing our own trumpet (!) as we celebrate the Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle’s 30th edition (as you can see from the photo, some members of the Bugle editorial team are just a little bit older than 30). It was a steep learning curve at first, but we think that we have come a long way since we launched our small six-page newsletter’ in January 2007. We feel very privileged that as part of our ‘job’ we have been able to explore, experience and write about so many different aspects of life in the Rethymnon area. We have met some wonderful people and been to some fantastic places in the last two and a half years! We are, of course, also extremely grateful for the help, encouragement and support we have received along the way from all our readers, advertisers and feature article contributors. Thanks to one and all!

Summer Solstice Barbeque at Camping Elizabeth!

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - Summer SolsticeThis month the annual Rethymnon CIC Summer Solstice Barbeque will take place at Camping Elizabeth on Saturday June 20th. Come and enjoy a swim and eat, drink and be merry. The barbeque itself, which is a ‘pay as you go’ event, starts at 19.30 onwards and vegetarian options will be available. No pre-booking required. You will find directions to Camping Elizabeth on our Community Page. For further information contact Anna Capernaros on 6938708410. See you there!

Renaissance Festival: Volunteers Needed!

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - Renaissance FestivalAs we reported last month, this year the Rethymnon Renaissance Festival will take place from the 12th to the 22nd July, and if last year is anything to go by, it should be a really fantastic event.

The Festival Committee is still looking for volunteers to help out in a number of ways. Aside from participating in the opening and closing ceremonies / street parades, volunteers are needed ‘backstage’ to help with decorations etc. Members of the International Community can also help by agreeing to act as escorts and guides to some of the visiting performers. You can get in touch with the organizing committee on 28310 88279 or via email on politismos@rethymno.gr (please leave your contact details and an indication of how you would like to help).
