Goddess of the Month: Artemis

God of the Month: ArtemisAs regular readers will know, this feature (which we still think is one of the better ideas for the Bugle) was originally suggested to us by Arlette Veltjen, who, along with her partner Triantafillos, runs the Restaurant Paradiso in Agia Galini. And once again, thanks to both for a lovely lunch! Anyway, back to Artemis. Daughter of big daddy Zeus (quelle surprise!) and twin sister of Apollo, she is possibly the earliest known role model for hippy feminist chicks. Artemis decided at a very early age that she had no truck with marriage, and had no wish to own a “Barbie” doll, preferring to play with bows and arrows instead. Known as the ‘wild and untamed maiden’ she was also called ‘Keladini’ which means ‘unruly’ and ‘noisy’. Artemis liked dancing and shouted a lot. Mistress of the animals, she spent much of her time in the forest, and is often pictorially represented keeping company with a stag or deer. She symbolized virginity and chastity, but was also the goddess of childbirth. Obviously a complex woman, then. Her Roman equivalent is Diana - the huntress. Not sure we’re going to go down the route of making any references to famous people called ‘Diana’ at this point, but we do like Artemis!

Paradise Singers Come to Crete: June 5th

A date for your diary! The PARADISE SINGERS will be giving a concert in the Roman Catholic Cathedral in Hania on Saturday June 5th at 8.30pm. This is the 'ad hoc' group of UK-based friends who have been to Crete twice in the past to work with Bob Scott (Kokkino Horio) for a week before putting on a concert of unaccompanied choral music. The programme will be a mixture, as before; some sacred, some secular, some serious, some funny and even 'a song from the shows' this time around! It is an interesting programme and your support will be greatly appreciated by Bob and the 22 singers. The concert, as usual, will be free although there will be a collection for charity if you wish to contribute. Please tell any friends that you think may be interested! Thank you. To find out more you can contact Bob Scott on 6944506554.
