Let the Fun Begin!

Let the fun begin! The duvet has gone back into the cupboard, the shorts are on, the beach chairs are out, we’ve got some tourists here and the Festival season has started! Yippee! The big event in Rethymnon this month is of course the Wine Festival (you will find details of programme highlights on the following page, and the picture on the right from last year might give you a bit of a taster of the ambience) but as ever, there is so much else going on in Rethymnon. Impossible to include everything in this edition, but check online for updates. And, let’s not forget that in July we have the Renaissance Festival too. You’ll find details of the Renaissance Festival programme online on the www.rethymnon.biz website, and we will be featuring this event in next month’s issue.

Battle of Crete Commemorations: Request for Photos

Jeananne Brown writes: ‘I am an Australian who has been in Crete for a couple of months to learn about the place and people because my Dad was here during WWII. He was in the 2/11 battalion of the Australian Army. He was at the Platanes / Missiria / Rethymnon sector. He was in the group that were captured and were POWs in Germany for 4 years following the Crete battle. I was at the remembrance ceremonies at Rethymnon, Missiria and Stavromenos and am wondering if any photos of these ceremonies have come your way? If so, is there any way that I could pay for a copy of them to take back to Australia to show my dad. He's 91, has dementia and is in very poor health. He doesn't really know his family most of the time but still talks about Crete. I'd be grateful for any info/leads you could give me about this. I know there were heaps of people taking pictures but I have no idea who any of them were. I was busy being part of the services. I didn't take any pictures because of the emotion of being at the ceremonies!’ If anyone can help by donating pictures via email, please get in touch with Kate at the Bugle (contact details below) and she will pass them on (for free) to Jeananne.
