New Ferry for Rethymnon |

Row, row, row your boat…. |
NEL Lines—A Lesbos based ferry company has received the go-ahead from
the Ministry of Commercial Shipping to start operating a high speed
ferry connection between Rethymnon and Pireus. The ferry, Aeolos
Kenderis 1, starts on May 11th, the trip is expected to take
approximately 5 hours, about half the time of the standard crossing. As
an aside, the association of ‘Kenderis’ and ‘High speed’ raised a wry
smile amongst some of us who remember certain aspects of the 2004
Olympics….
ANEK, who operates the current ‘Prevelis’ connection between Rethymnon
and Pireus has upset many Rethymniots by reducing the service to four
times a week. The Ministry of Commerce has been asking for some time for
a revival of a daily ferry connection. As yet, we have no information
regarding prices for the crossing, but tickets will be on sale at
‘Tourist Services’ on the beach road, opposite the Marina. We will keep
you updated when we find out more. |
Sporting Life: If the Volleyball Team can’t get to the game,
they can’t lose…. |
|
Sad to say, the fortunes of the men’s volleyball team have not
improved. They have only 3 points out of 14 games played. Current wisdom
is that it needs a miracle for them to stay in the same division. And
whilst we’re on the subject of ‘Acts of God’ and Volleyball, here’s a
thing….The women’s volleyball team has not been having much luck up to
now either (though they did win 1 game in February). However, their last
away game, against AO Poseidon (of all names), was cancelled - our team
couldn’t get off the island due to bad weather. No-one is quite sure
what the consequences of this will be, but at the moment it looks as if
the Gods may have been smiling in our favour.
As for Asteras Rethymnon, our football team, well not much new to
report. They’re still second in their division, 3 points behind the
leaders Malia. If Asteras win all of their remaining games this season
then they will definitely become top of the division and be promoted to
the ‘Γ’ division of the Greek league. Now this may not seem like a major
sporting achievement for some of you, but we’re getting quite excited
here at CMB headquarters.

Tourist Police: The Plot Thickens! |
The saga of the tourist police continues: they still haven’t
moved—neither have the Port Authority or the EOT. What is more, it looks
unlikely that any of these organizations will actually be able to move
to their proposed new home any time soon. Building work has uncovered
serious structural faults on the ground floor of the Delfini
building—the proposed new home.
To put matters right at the Delfini |
building is going to take
considerably more time and money than had been originally planned. There
is now of course the problem of finding additional finances from the
council purse, which, as anyone who knows bureaucracy here will tell
you, is unlikely to be a swift and straightforward process. In any case,
it now seems certain that the building will not be ready for this
Tourist Season. |
Making matters worse, as we reported last month, the demolition of the
Lavyrinthos—current home to these organizations, has been proceeding
with remarkable (some might say alarming) efficiency. The words
‘counting’, ‘chickens’, ‘before’ and ‘hatched’ come to mind. Watch out
for tents being pitched on the beach….Joking apart, though, this whole
story does seem to be just one sorry shambles.

Further Recycling
Initiatives in Rethymnon |
|
The plan is that from mid-March, collection of recyclable materials
is to be doubled—this is thanks to a new rubbish separation facility
that will become operational in Tria Monastiria. For those not in the
know, recycling wheelie bins are blue in colour (see picture) and are
dotted at random locations across town. From April, the local council
has also agreed that there will be an additional rubbish collection
truck for Rethymnon.
Rubbish disposal is a problem for the region. The landfill site at
Maroulas has closed, and Rethymnon rubbish now goes to the Amari tip. As
waste from Rethymnon alone reaches over 100 tonnes a day in the summer,
the increase in recycling facilites is welcome to say the least! |
