Music in Rethymnon

Statue of Kostas Mountakis, Rethymnon
Anyone who lives or visits Crete cannot fail to escape the fact that music and dancing occupy a central role in Cretan life. From the ubiquitous ‘Zorba’ to alternative modern jazz and Norwegian Rock (cheers Wendy and Laina!), there are all manner of musical experiences to be sampled on this island.
Evidence of the role of music and dancing on Crete dates back to prehistoric times. In one of the best known myths of the island, the Kourites — guardians of infant Zeus — are said to have banged their shields and danced in order to try and cover up the baby’s crying. Archaeological finds, such as the sarcophagus at Agia Triada, depict early forms of the lyre, and there are, of course, accounts in Homer of wild partying at Knossos….

Traditionally, Rethymnon has been known as the ‘town of arts and letters’, and there is an incredible array of cultural and creative activities throughout the year. Hardly surprising, then, that music and dancing are particularly important to Rethymniots.
The distinctive Cretan lyra first started to come into its own during the 17th century. Rethymnon is home to the modern Cretan lyra—the first instrument being built by Rethymniot Manolis Stagakis in 1940. In the 1950s and 1960s local virtuosos Kostas Mountakis and Thanassis Skordalos, helped to promote the lyra on the international stage. More recently, musicians such as the Gounakis family have made valuable contributions to the World Music Scene.

Live Music During the Winter

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - Music in Rethymnon
Here we see Mikis and friends at the Caribbean in full flow, entertaining us well into the small hours on Tsiknopempti.
A bit late in the day, perhaps - as winter is drawing to a close and the tourist season is rapidly approaching - but winter is one of the best times of year to experience music in Rethymnon. During the summer, many Rethymniots are working 7 days a week in the tourist industry, so cannot take time out to party. In the winter, though, while many tourist restaurants shut down, a number of venues offer Greek and International music at weekends, and you have the opportunity to experience music that many summer visitors never get to hear.

There are so many places to choose from that it is difficult to single any particular one out—and it is a matter of taste of course. However, one of our favourite venues for a weekend night (and not-so-early morning!) out this winter has been Restaurant Caribbean, by the Rimondi Fountain. Choose from a selection of mezes, or from Greek and International main dishes. The band generally starts playing at around 11pm. The music is an eclectic mix of Greek folk, jazz, blues and rock. On more than one occasion some members of the CMB crew have partied until dawn….
