Summer Fête: Help Please!

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - Mediterranean Garden Society
London Eye might be a bit over-ambitious!

As you may remember, in the January coffee morning meeting at SVEA, Denise Summers came up with a wonderful idea—to hold a summer fête (well, it wouldn’t be a winter one, obviously!) somewhere in Rethymnon. The initial plan was to hold it the beginning / middle of September, so we need to start combining all the multi-national talents of the Rethymnon coffee morning bugle crew to make this a really unique event. As Denise says, it would be a great way to forge even more links with other people in Rethymnon. It should be lots of fun! And creative genius has already been at work, for it has been suggested by one of the crew that ‘coconut shy’ could be replaced with ‘smash a melon’.

Obviously, we need an outdoors location with plenty of space—first thing that springs to mind is the municipal park, so, dearest mayor, what do you think? Failing that, we would really like to hear from anyone who could offer a decent amount of ground that is relatively CENTRAL to Rethymnon and/or suburbs.
If enough people would like to do this, and if we all pull together—pooling all our very different skills and resources, then this would be a lovely thing to do.

Road Safety Initiatives for Young People in Rethymnon

Preliminary feelers are being put out from an international team of psychologists (Greece, Israel, UK and US), as to the possibilities of implementing some road safety interventions with young people in Rethymnon. The team’s first focus area (though there are of course many others) is conducting research into ‘lack of willingness to wear crash helmets’, - even after relatively tough legislation and severe fines. It is, actually, not straightforward to research this type of behaviour—for UK readers, one only has to think of the various ‘Don’t Drink and Drive’ campaigns that have been tried. Our deputy mayor, Costas Iliakis, is on board, and would welcome local and international feedback at any level– practical and/or academic, that could be offered . Research co-ordinators in Crete are: Sofia Trilivas PhD, University of Crete, phone: 28310 77542, Kate Brusten PhD, Rethymnon, phone 28310 54594.

Lykeion Ellenidon Seminars

The Lykeio Ellenidon (Lyceum for Women) has been running community education programmes for some 25 years now. This semester a course of sessions centred round the theme of Social Identity is being led by Sofia Trilivas of the University of Crete. Sessions take place every Wednesday evening at 7pm at the community Lykeio building—on the beach road near the old harbour, next to Savodor Sandwich shop, and last 2 hours. This semester sessions will run until 28th March.
Sessions are free, and all are welcome to attend. Sessions take the form of structured group discussions, and are conducted in Greek. If your language skills are up to it, then it is a very good way to get to know some other Rethymniots.

CIC Coffee Mornings

The Rethymnon branch of the Cretan International Community meets on the first Thursday of every month at SVEA Swedish Coffee Shop, from 11 a.m.  Regardless of membership status, everyone is welcome to attend.  Coffee mornings are a good opportunity to meet friendly people living in your area, and to find out about local events.

Coffee mornings are also a lot of fun—and you don’t even have to drink coffee!

The local coordinator for the Rethymnon branch of the CIC is Anna Capernaros.  Please contact her for directions to SVEA, details of upcoming CIC events and for any membership queries that you may have.

Anna may be reached on 28310 57305

Further information about the CIC organization itself may be found on their website: www.thecic.eu

CIC newsletters are free to members.  Non-members may purchase them from News Stand, 31 Plateia Agnostou Stratioti (Square of the Unknown Soldier) Rethymnon
