This Month

From Lent to Easter

After the mayhem of Carnival, and the time for reflection associated with Lent, it’s not surprising that town is relatively quiet this month. However, there are still some important events of note for the CMB crew calendar.
5th March: Kate and Luc’s House Party. First anniversary of the house-warming, starts 4pm, phone 28310 54594 for directions
8th March: International Women’s Day. As yet, we are not aware of any formal events in Rethymnon, but keep an eye on www.rethymnon.biz for updates.

March 8th
Women across the globe, celebrate!

25th March: Feast of Annunciation and Greek Independence Day.
National Holiday, bands and parades in town, again, check the www.rethymnon.biz website for further details as we get them.
1st April: Start of Holy Week. Rethymnon prepares for Easter, the biggest festival in the Greek Orthodox calendar, which this year is on 8th April.
AND FINALLY— CIC COFFEE MORNING AT SVEA: Thursday 5th April from 11 am, all welcome!

March 25th: Feast of Annunciation and Greek Independence Day

March 25th is a very important national holiday in the Greek calendar. For Greek Orthodox Christians, this day has deep religious significance, marking the day that Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary that she was expecting a child. It was also on this day in 1821 that Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the flag of revolution against the occupying Turks, and the Greek War of Independence began.

Greek Independence was ratified by the Treaty of Constantinople in July 1932. For Crete, however, independence came somewhat later. The Turkish period of occupation on the island ended in 1897 with the arrival of the Great Powers. It was not until 1912 that the first Cretan representatives were allowed in the Greek parliament, and Crete finally became unified with Greece in 1913.

The Greek flag combines several religious, political and mythical elements. The cross emphasizes the role of the Orthodox church in establishing the Greek Nation. The mix of blue and white stripes represent the sea: according to myth, Aphrodite emerged from the Aegean. The number of stripes—nine—is also symbolic, each stripe standing for one letter of the Greek word for freedom: ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑ

Stella McBarking’s Your Month in the Stars

After Stella’s success in the February issue, by popular request, here are this month’s predictions for the Coffee Morning Crew Cosmic Schema:
Teaspoon: 10th February—26th March. Teaspoons are almost always in demand - this month is no exception. Don’t take on too much, though. Let others in your set carry some of the load.
Cement Mixer: 27th March-16th April. This time of year is often one of the most productive for Cement Mixers, especially those based in Rethymnon, and you may find that mid-March is particularly busy. Be sure to take plenty of time out to relax and enjoy the Easter break!
Dandelion: 17th April—23rd May. Some Dandelions may feel that they have yet to come into their own this year—but never fear, soon, soon, your blossoming talents will start to flower.
Paper Clip: 24th May—19th June. All in all, a good month for those born under the Paper Clip sign. Plenty of activity, which should be rewarding and fulfilling. Don’t forget to unwind once in a while!
Beach Chair: 20th June-1st October. Beach Chairs are about to really come into their element. So this might be a time to re-group and straighten out any worrying little niggles you may have.
Sock: 2nd October—14th December. For those Socks that have been feeling rather restricted during the winter months, be patient: as summer approaches, liberation is at hand.
Pringle: 15th December—9th February. The lead up to Easter is often seen as a quiet period for those born under this sign, though there are still plenty of positive opportunities for Pringles. Look out for unexpected party invites!
