Crete Kennels: Let it Snow!
Whilst
there is plenty of snow on the mountains in winter time, down here in Rethymnon itself, snow is extremely
rare. Great excitement, then, when we had snow in the suburbs on February 18th (and yes, it is such a rare
event that we do mark it as a red letter day). The cold spell in mid-February led to a flurry (sorry!) of
emails from our friends Peter and Kimberly in Armeni. ‘The heating’s seized up….
We’ve finished the malt
whisky….We’ve still got some medicinal raki left’. It was rather like getting messages from Scott of the
Antarctic. Unfortunately there weren’t any St Bernards on hand to dig Peter and Kimberley out of the snow
and feed them brandy. Never mind, as you can see, the dogs at the kennels enjoyed the unusual weather. The
authorities cleared the national highway soon enough with a bulldozer, but many people in Armeni apparently
still couldn’t get out and about as the excess snow from the road was shovelled up against their front
doors…..(only on Crete?!) Anyway, the snow didn’t last long and gave us a bit of fun.
February was a good month for Crete Kennels, with a number of different canine visitors. Peter and
Kimberley also kindly acted as a ‘halfway house’ for the adorable Leon—the white dog pictured
left-
who was waiting to be re-homed by Friends of Animals Rethymno. Leon has now found new owners who are
absolutely besotted with him! Good news of course, but he will be missed at the kennels.
You’ll find contact details for Peter and Kimberley below. Bear in mind that Catholic Easter is
coming up at the end of the month—so make sure you book your dog’s holiday well in advance!
