Independence Day and St Patrick!

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - St Patrick's DayCarnival is over, and it’s Lent, so all things considered you would imagine that March would be a quiet month in Rethymnon! But as we all know, it doesn’t always work like that. There are a couple of major holidays this month, too. Greek Independence Day is celebrated on March 25th. This is an important holiday for both religious and secular reasons. In the Orthodox Calendar, March 25th is celebrated as the feast of the Annunciation, it is also marked as commemorating the beginning of the Greek War of Independence which started in 1821. Banks, shops and offices etc will be closed on this day, and there will be military parades in the centre of Rethymnon from mid-morning.

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th (see www.internationalwomensday.com for more about this). Some of us in the international community will be celebrating St Patrick’s day on 17th March, too (and yes, you will be able to find green Guinness).

As ever, if you know of an event that you would like to see publicised in the next issue, please get in touch with us! Our contact details are at the bottom of this page.

Laina’s March Programme

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - Akropolis FunHats off to Laina, yet again, for giving us a stunning series of March events at The Akropolis Taverna in Platanes (about 5km East of Rethymnon). Highlights of her programme are presented below. You will find the programme online at the www.rethymnon.biz website, and you’ll also be able to access it via our Facebook group (see Lifestyle Too for further details). Coming into Platanes from the West, The Akropolis is on the left hand side of the road, almost directly opposite Galaxie Car Rental, about 25 metres further on from the Taxi Rank and ‘Happy Train’ stop. To avoid disappointment please book ahead of time for Fish and Chips Nights (as you will see from the programme, you can now order take away fish and chips as well!) and those famous Sunday Roasts!
