Friends of Animals Charity Bazaar on 16th May

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - Friends of Animals, RethymnonFriends of Animals Rethymno (FAR) will be hosting their charity spring bazaar / plant sale / table top sale on Saturday 16th May in Pigi Village Square (Pigi is just a few kilometres East of Rethymnon) from 10am to 2pm. The cost of hiring a table is 10 Euros (proceeds go directly towards the charity) and the tables will be provided. For bookings and information, contact Clodagh on 6945170226. FAR would appreciate donations of plants, books, clothes, household items etc. ahead of time - these can be dropped off in the new FAR charity shop in Pigi Village Square. The current opening hours for the shop are Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 2pm. From 17th May, the FAR shop will also be open in the evenings from 7pm to 9.30pm. Volunteers to help staff the shop are desperately needed. Please, if you can spare a few hours to help out in the shop, get in touch with Clodagh, or pass by the shop during opening hours. And, of course, donations to the shop (clothes in good condition, household goods, DVDs, books, bric-a-brac etc.) are welcome at any time!

FAR now sends out their own newsletter and re-homing lists via email. If you would like to be on the mailing list, or are able to volunteer, please email christinastylianides75@hotmail.com or phone FAR’s general info line on 6975720313. You will also find links on the www.rethymnon.biz website. You can find out more about the work of Friends of Animals on the www.animals.rethymnon.org website. FAR are now finding it increasingly difficult to re-home older dogs—some as young as 7 months old– so if you can help, please do!

Bob and Eveleen Wright will be hosting a Coffee and Cake morning in aid of the GREEK RED CROSS: ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟΣ ΕΡΥΘΡΟΣ ΣΤΑΥΡΟΣ at Villa Estia, Maroulas, on Sunday 17th May from 10.30am to 1pm. Tickets for this event will be available at the Rethymnon CIC Coffee Morning on May 7th, and also on the door. Entrance: 10 Euros per person or 15 Euros per couple - this includes coffee or tea and cake, plus one raffle ticket.

Directions to Villa Estia: Take the road from Platanes (5km east of Rethymnon) to Arkadi, past the new LIDL. In Tsesmes, DO NOT take the first turn right to Maroulas! Instead, continue towards Adele, past the EKO garage. On the right is a mini-market ‘O Manos’, the next right is the turn to Agia Paraskevi and Maroulas. 100m further on is a three-way junction. Take the right turn to Maroulas, and Villa Estia is the second house on the right, before the first large bend.

It would be helpful if you could let Bob and Eveleen know in advance if you are going to attend this event so that they can get an idea of numbers. And any donations of cakes for the day would be greatly appreciated….!

To contact Bob and Eveleen for further information please call 28310 71221 or email bobandev@otenet.gr

The local branch of the Red Cross helps those in need in the Rethymnon region. This includes those who have somehow ‘fallen through the net’ or have become victims of natural disasters such as fire and floods. Please help to support this worthwhile cause

Renaissance Festival: Call for Volunteers

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - Renaissance FestivalAnd, finally, it’s that time of year again! The dates for the annual Rethymnon Renaissance Festival have now been announced. Every summer Rethymnon hosts a series of cultural and music events as part of its Renaissance Festival (You can read more about this in the July and August 2008 editions of the Bugle). The festival consists of music, theatre and dance from the Renaissance involving performers from all over Europe and the Balkans (and much more besides!). This year the Festival will take place from the 12th to the 22nd July, and the overall theme is ‘Water’ (the second out of four basic elements used, last year the theme was ‘Fire’) We will be publishing a full programme of events as soon as we get them—probably in the July issue of the Bugle. Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - Renaissance FestivalAs far as we understand it right now, most of the music performances will probably take place in the Odeion (Neranzte Mosque). Once again, as soon as we know more, we’ll let you know.

The Festival Committee is looking for volunteers to help out in a number of ways. Aside from participating in the opening and closing ceremonies / street parades, volunteers are needed ‘backstage’ to help with decorations etc. Members of the International Community can also help by agreeing to act as escorts and guides to some of the visiting performers. You can get in touch with the organizing committee on 28310 88279 or via email on politismos@rethymno.gr (please leave your contact details and an indication of how you would like to help).
