May 8th - 9th: Fund Raising Weekend!

Friends of Animals Rethymno will be hosting their Spring Bazaar on Saturday 8th May from 10am to 2pm in Pigi Village Square (parking will be available at the football pitch just five minute’s walk from the square). To book a table and / or to make donations please contact Clodagh on 6945170226 or Rita on 6979148652. All proceeds will go towards relieving the suffering of stray animals, so please come and support this event! Many thanks to Clodagh Hogan for providing us with this update about the St Patrick’s Day fundraising lunch. Clodagh writes: ‘Once again we had a great time at the White Lady Taverna in March. Lots of old and new faces came to support us and I think I can say we all had a good time. We had a wonderful lunch cooked by Jackie while Roger kept everyone on their toes with great Irish Music and dancing and as usual Tonia, Yannis and Vassilis kept us entertained with lots of surprises. It was one of my better Patrick’s Days here on Crete. The raffle was a huge success with our three Irish Hampers and lots of other nice prizes. All the prizes were donated by local shops, restaurants, hairdressers, vets etc., even Baileys Ireland sent us some bits and pieces! We had lots of happy winners. The important thing for us is that we raised 654.00 euros which really came in just in time to pay some overdue bills at the vets. I would like to thank everyone who came and supported F.A.R. and for making it such a fun day. Hope to see you all there next year!’
Rethymnon Municipal Youth Orchestra-Benefit Concert: Saturday 8th May
For those of you who read about this event in the Bugle last month, please note that the date has now changed!
Rethymnon Municipal Youth Orchestra and the Music School choir will be performing a benefit concert in aid of our local Branch of the Samaritans of the Hellenic Red Cross on Saturday 8th May. The concert is scheduled to start at 9pm and will take place at the Nerantze Mosque (Odeion). Tickets are priced at 10 euros. The Rethymnon Municipal Youth Orchestra is an amateur symphony orchestra, consisting mostly of high school and university students, but essentially anyone playing an instrument and wishing to play it with others is welcome. The orchestra’s activities are mainly in Rethymnon, but also have an eye on the rest of Crete. The repertoire is ‘symphonic’, that is to say: classics, but also include The Police, Frank Zappa, Manos Hadzidakis and other contemporary composers arranged for symphony orchestra. The orchestra has even worked together with Greek popstar Alkinoos Ioannidis. For further information about the benefit event and / or the orchestra please contact Rino on 6944758441.
Red Cross Coffee and Cake Morning: Sunday May 9th
On May 9th from 10 am until 1.30 pm Bob and Eveleen Wright will be hosting a ‘Coffee and Cake Morning’ at their home, Villa Estia in Maroulas, Rethymnon Province, in aid of the local Samaritans who are the ‘Search and Rescue / Emergency First Aid’ branch of the Hellenic Red Cross. There will be an entrance fee of 10 euros which will also buy you a raffle ticket (and there are some great prizes to be won!). As we reported in our February edition, our local Samaritans rely almost exclusively on charitable donations for funding and are currently in need of help in order to finance a desperately needed ‘4 by 4’ rescue jeep which will cost in the region of 15,000 Euros. We are hoping that the money raised from the Coffee and Cake morning and from other fund raising events (including profits from the Rethymnon CIC February excursion and a forthcoming benefit concert by the Rethymnon Youth Orchestra, - for further details of this orchestral event please see below) will go some way towards helping to fund this. For the Coffee and Cake Morning donations of cakes would be really welcome. And if you are planning to donate a cake it would be very helpful if you could let Bob and Ev know ahead of time. And anyone who could offer the loan of some garden chairs for the day would also be a good friend, too. Contact details for Bob and Ev are as follows: Bob and Ev Wright: Villa Estia, P.O. Box 7791,Rethymno 74100,Crete, Greece. Tel: 0030 28310 71221 Mobile: 0030 6947186679. Email: bobandev@otenet.gr
