May Day and Battle of Crete Commemorations

Battle of Crete CommemorationsWe start the month with May Day, of course, which is a public holiday. Here it is celebrated both as the Festival of Flowers and as International Worker’s Day. Given the current economic climate, there are likely to be several political rallies in the major cities in Greece (we’ll report back next month!).

In the latter half of May veterans and locals pay their respects to those who lost their lives in the Battle of Crete which took place in May 1941. You can find out more about this in our May 2007 edition. There will be a flag raising ceremony on Friday 21st May at the Firkas Fortress, Hania Old Harbour at 10am. There will be a service and wreath laying at Souda Bay War Cemetery on Saturday 22nd May at 6pm. There will also be other commemorative events in our region which are likely to include Preveli Monastery and Stavromenos. We will update you online as and when we get more information.

Finally, many thanks to Elizabeth Creed for providing us with the following link - http://www.mariahill.com.au/diggersandgreeks/index.htm - this website provides a fascinating insight into the role that Australian soldiers played in the campaign. From the website you also discover the somewhat horrifying facts that a) the ’Diggers’ who fought in Greece and Crete were never issued with a campaign medal, and b) The soldiers were forbidden for many years to wear the medal issued to them by the Greek government on Anzac Day. It is hoped that the veterans will be issued with medals in time for the 70th anniversary in 2011.

Eurovision Song Contest

Thanks to Elizabeth Creed (again!) for the reminder, and also to Kate Clayton Hathway and Tony for that great party in May 2004. Dearest readers, there really is no escape. The Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Oslo, Norway, this year. The semi finals are on 25th and 27th May, and the Grand Final is on the 29th.
