The Local Greek Red Cross: Helping Them, Helping Us

Thanks go to Bob and Eveleen Wright for providing us with the following news:
“Since 2005, our local community has raised over 5,400 euros for the Rethymnon branch of the ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟΣ ΕΡΥΘΡΟΣ ΣΤΑΥΡΟΣ. We hope to have a visit from the ‘Samaritas’ group at the November Rethymnon CIC coffee morning. They are fully trained [500 hours] young volunteers who can help in fires, road accidents, mountain rescues and earthquakes. The leader, Konstantinos, along with his faithful rescue dog Mare - a one year old golden Labrador who has his own uniform - will be coming to visit us at Svea’s.
The plan is that in the near future Kosti, who is a qualified CPR instructor, will be able to give us a demonstration of how to deal with emergencies such as strokes and heart attacks. The demonstrations will take place in the Red Cross offices in the old town. For a donation of 5 euros, along with the demonstrations, coffee and biscuits will also be provided. This money will go towards providing the charity with new equipment.
For those of you who have not visited the local branch of the Red Cross yet, it is located at IG Melhissedek 6, in the old town (phone: 28310 35083). It is very easy to find. If you are walking into the old town from Four Martyrs Square, go through the Megali Porta (old archway), take the first left and then the first right. Their building is 25 metres from the corner on the left. Please bring good used clothes there on Mondays and Fridays between 10 am and 12 noon, when the sisters of the Red Cross will be there to take your gifts. Many of us have clothes which are too warm for our heated houses and these would be greatly appreciated by the needy living in mountain villages.”

Thanks also go to Jan Rouschop for sending us his solutions to our September and October logic problems. The rules of our competition go like this. Submit your entries to us by the copy deadline and each month we will publish a running tally of top five scorers. At the end of the year, the top scoring contestant(s) will win a meal for two at a restaurant in Rethymnon courtesy of the Bugle. You will find the solution to last month’s crossword on our Fun and Games page,  and, if you are very lucky, we might even supply some hints towards the end of the month on our Facebook group wall. Keep those entries rolling in!
