Arkadi Day and Bonfire Night

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - Arkadi DayAt the beginning of November, here in Rethymnon we commemorate the 143rd anniversary of the siege of Arkadi Monastery that took place in 1866. You can read more about the background to this in November 2007 issue of the Bugle. The 7th and 8th of November are treated as public holidays in Rethymnon so expect shops and offices to be closed (hang on a minute - the 7th and the 8th are a Saturday and a Sunday so offices wouldn’t be open anyway).

Several events have been planned to mark the occasion. On the Saturday, there will be several dedicated ceremonies in villages from the municipality of Arkadi. These villages include: Margarites (9.30 am), Amnatos (11 am) and Adele (noon). On Sunday, for the early risers amongst you there is a church service at Arkadi Monastery at 8.30 am. The traditional parade will take place in Rethymnon from about 10 am. After which it’s back to the Monastery for the official doxology. This will be followed by a memorial service at the ossuary.

The sacred flame signaling the start of the Arkadi run will be lit at 2.30 pm. The flame should arrive in the municipal stadium at around 3 pm. The torch generally arrives before the first runner hits town. Weather permitting, there will be ’sports displays’ and traditional music and dance on the pitch in the football field.

On 5th November, some British people celebrate the failure of people trying to blow up parliament in bygone years. In the historical documents you’ll find various accounts of why this attempt failed. Conspiracy and back-biting might be part of the explanation. The fact that the matches were wet might be another.

Armistice Day

Armistice Day (11th November) brings with it mixed emotions for many in the international community, and, is, of course, a time to pause and reflect. Here on Crete a Memorial Service of Remembrance will take place on 8th November at the Souda Bay Cemetery, and is scheduled to start at 10.45 am. To find out more information email armisticememorial@gmail.com or phone +30 694 797 3492.
