Summer Round-up

Festival Finales

September sees the Rethymnon Renaissance Festival drawing to a close, and there are only a few events timetabled in the official programme — these we have listed below. Please note that some events listed in the official programme have been cancelled (events during the last week of August due to National Mourning following the fires). The Argentinean Tango night originally scheduled for September 15th has been shelved as this date is the eve of the General Election. This year, the Bugle critics went to variety of performances, most of which were extremely enjoyable. Summer moving into Autumn does not mean the end of life as we know it, though, far from it! Rethymnon is generous when it comes to providing year-round entertainment—there’s nearly always something going on somewhere. The only thing is (as many of you are already aware): events are often only advertised at the last minute. So keep your eyes open for fly-posters, and check out the Rethymnon.biz website, where we will post details as we get them. Bear in mind that open-air performances may shift venue at the last minute if it rains.

Renaissance Review

Once again the diversity of entertainment on offer at the Festival was impressive. Highlights for us included the street performances by Studio Omma, art exhibitions such as Photo Therapy and, of course music. We enjoyed Serbian Brass, fusion of Cretan music and Flamenco, and an outstanding performance of Arabic music from the Ziryab Trio which had the added bonus of a surprise appearance from Ross Daly. All by all, a success. However, we a do have a couple of beefs about publicity and pricing which next year’s organizers might want to take on board. 20 euros was a bit steep for some events, and may have impacted on attendance levels. Getting the programme ready ahead of time would be helpful, too….

 Memories…...

In this montage we provide you with some of the photos that for one reason or another didn’t make it into previous issues of the Bugle. We hope that these give you a flavour of Summer 2007 in Rethymnon. Despite the various problems associated with the heat-wave, there was a lot of fun to be had in town!
