World Tourism Day

We’ve already mentioned the election, so no more about that here! September 27th is United Nations World Tourism Day. This year’s theme is ‘Tourism opens doors for women’, and the host nation is Sri Lanka. The aim is to flag the employment opportunities that tourism offers women, and the potential this has to help eliminate poverty in developing countries. The day is also geared towards highlighting women’s achievements in the industry, and to encourage further action to support the UN’S Third Millennium Development Goal: Promoting Gender Equality and Women Empowerment. A number of new initiatives are being launched relating to gender and tourism, to find out more about these, and the work of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation log on to the www.unwto.org website - where you can also find details of a photo competition which might be of interest (deadline November 8th). According to the blurb: ‘Winning photos should depict gender equality and women empowerment in action within the tourism sector in your country, featuring photos that show women and men participating equally in tourism activities and / or show women leaders within the tourism sector.’

In years gone by, Rethymnon business owners have used the day as a way of saying ‘Thank-you’ to foreign visitors: Tavernas and shops setting up trestle tables outside and offering free drinks and snacks for passers by. Other activities have included the staging of a traditional Cretan wedding parade through town. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens on the day. According to the local press, there will be an event sponsored by the County Council in the Municipal Park—apparently different communities from the Rethymnon Nomos will be promoting regional products. We don’t know much about this as yet, and we make no promises, but this does coincide nicely with the start of the new wine and raki season—we’ll keep you posted on the www.rethymnon.biz website.

If you know of an event that you would like to see publicized in the Bugle, you can email editor@rethymnonnews.com or KateBrusten@hotmail.com deadline for next issue is 27/09/2007

September Stars: Stella McBarking, Cornelius Pointy and Clairvoyant Chloe!

Well, it had to be too good to be true. The harmony we thought we’d achieved between our in-house astrologers didn’t last. In fact, at one point we thought our favourite mystics would soon be seeing all manner of stars — not all of them terribly useful for predicting destiny. Enter Clairvoyant Chloe, the voice of reason, to pour oil on troubled waters. So with her help, we bring you the Bugle’s astral forecast for September, using the unique star-sign system created by the combined forces of Stella Mc Barking and Cornelius Pointy:

Beach Chair AND Batman: 20th June—1st October
A few of you may be feeling a little overloaded right now. It’s time to put some of your plans into cold storage, shore-up your defences and lie back and relax. Those of you whose Batman aura is most prominent may find the winds of change frustrating. Stop trying to fly in the face of adversity and just go with the (air) flow.

Sock AND Satsuma: 2nd October—14th December
A busy time for many, and pairing up with another may be the best way to get those important projects finished. Choose your partners carefully though, and beware of people trying to pull the wool over your eyes. Your pithy sense of humour should see you through if life starts to give you the pip.

Pringle AND Paintbrush: 15th December—9th February
Life isn’t always ‘sour cream and chives’, sometimes things people say can really take the biscuit. Crack a joke, take the rough with the smooth, and life’s hue and cry will pass on by.

Teaspoon AND Tent-Peg: 10th February—26th March
Time to steel yourself to deal with any admin tasks that you may have let slide, even though coping with bureaucracy really isn’t your cup of tea. With officialdom, there’s no point trying to hammer your point home. Pitch your queries at a very low level, smile sweetly and you’ll end up feeling less strung out.

Cement Mixer AND Castanet: 27th March—16th April
People born under this sign often wonder why they work so hard when others are taking it easy. But this is what makes you such good role models. For those of you feeling a lack of motivation right now, don’t worry, your natural rhythm will soon return.

Dandelion AND Daffodil: 17th April—23rd May
It’s all coming up roses for you this month, which stems from the ground work you’ve put in over the last few months. It’s a great time to explore new avenues of personal growth.

Paper Clip AND Ping-Pong: 24th May—19th June
For the career-minded amongst you, this is a good time to forge links and network. In the creative sphere, it may be a good idea to bounce your ideas off other people before picking up the ball and running with it.
