Celebrating World Tourism Day in Rethymnon
September 27th is World Tourism Day. This year’s theme is Tourism: Responding to the Challenge of Climate Change - the host nation is
Peru. Throughout the world there will be various events taking place to mark this day. You can find out more about global initiatives
and the work of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation on the
www.unwto.org/wtd website.
Here in Rethymnon, the latest word from the Town Hall as the Bugle deadline loomed was that ’Something’ will happen on or around World
Tourism Day — ’Probably in the Park’. As many of you will know by now, asking for more details so far ahead of time (hey, it’s four
weeks away) is a non-starter here! As we recall, we were similarly vague in our September 2007 issue. But, if last year’s five day
fiesta is anything to go by, this will be a party that should not be missed! As ever, keep looking out for posters around town and
check the www.rethymnon.biz website nearer the date. We hope to provide a report on the celebrations in our next issue.
Aside from the Tourism Day Festivities, there is no official ‘programme’ of events as such for September. The summer festival
season comes to a close –you’ll find a review of festival highlights on the next page. The final cultural happening that comes under
the auspices of the summer programme is an art exhibition by artists from the Ukraine which runs from the 11th September until the
11th October at the Fortezza. But don’t worry, on the cultural and entertainment front, there is always plenty going on here! And
if you know of event that you would like to see publicized, get in touch: our contact details are at the bottom of this page.
