World Tourism Day

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - Kotsyfou GorgeSeptember 27th is World Tourism Day. This year’s theme is ‘Celebrating Diversity’. During the weekend of the 26th-27th there will be several happenings in and around Rethymnon to mark the day. The schedule has yet to be finalised, but so far we have been promised the following: On Saturday 26th at 7.30pm there will be a tourism award ceremony at the House of Culture. There will then be a concert by Φωνές του Νότου in Mikriasiaton Square (New Square Old Town) with the Hotel Owners Association providing free raki (!!!!). On the 27th a traditional Cretan wedding will be staged in town, but the time and place has yet to be confirmed. There are also likely to be several other promotional events and exhibitions taking place, we update you online on the www.rethymnon.biz website when we have more information.

Summer Arts Festival September Timetable: The Summer Arts Festival draws to a close this month, but there are still some great performances on offer. You’ll find highlights of the programme below. Advance tickets and further information should be available from the Information Kiosk on Four Martyrs‘ Square. Tickets go on sale at the Erofili Theatre (phone 28310 28101) an hour before the performances scheduled starting time. Note: All musical and theatrical performances are scheduled to take place at the Erofili Theatre (Open Air Theatre) at the Fortezza and start at 9.30pm unless otherwise stated. As ever, though, the programme may be subject to last minute changes, so check before you go!

Theatre

1st & 2nd: A Florentine Tragedy by Oscar Wilde, performed by “Eidomen”. Starts 9pm. 16€, 8€ for students, children under 15 free.

6th: The Philosopher Xanthus and his slave Aesop performed by Krekoria Theatre Company. 15€, 10€ for students.

8th: To Teras ton skopidion performed by Cengiz Ozek, and Story of A Seagull And The Cat Who Taught Her To Fly by Luis Sepulveda - performed by Omma Studio. 10€.

Music

5th: Delicatessen (Jazz and Bossa) and "Creta Brass” 10€. 11th: Guitar Quartet Frangiskos Leontaritis 15€. 20th: Thanasis Papakonstantinou 20€.

Art Exhibition

Until 6th September: Exhibition of work by Anna Saloustrou in the Rethymnon House of Culture, Old Town. Open every day from 11am to 2pm and 6pm to 9pm, entrance free.


Celebrating the Life of Pantelis Prevelakis

Rethymnon Coffee Morning Bugle - Pantelis PrevelakisThis year is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Pantelis Prevelakis, renowned Rethymnon writer - best known internationally for his book ‘Tale of a Town’, which portrayed life in Rethymnon during the 1930s. Prevelakis is one of the great figures in modern Greek literature, and his work encompasses several genres, including drama, fiction, poetry and essays. He has been profoundly influential on Greek culture, and is revered here on Crete due in part to the fact that his writings were grounded in his Cretan heritage. In September, there will be several events commemorating his life and work . On September 11th at 11am, there will be a guided visit to Prevelakis’ grave and tour of the Annex of the Athens School of Fine Art. On the evening of the 11th, at 5.30pm the official opening of the commemorations will take place in the Rethymnon House of Culture, this will be followed by a series of lectures. On September 12th a memorial service will be held in Arsani Monastery at 9am, this will be then be followed by a series of lectures at the Monastery Conference Centre. On the evening of the 12th there will be a showing of the film Ο Ηλιος του Θανάτου. From 11th-18th September there will be an exhibition about the life and work of Pantelis Prevelakis at the Rethymnon House of Culture.
