The Party

The big event for CMB readers this month is the summer solstice barbecue at Camping Elizabeth. This takes place from 7 pm on Thursday 21st June, replacing, for this month only, the afternoon CIC ‘chat and swim’ meeting. The barbecue is a pay as you go event for food and drink, and all are welcome. If you are planning to attend, please call Anna on 28310 57305 or text 6938708410 by June 19th so that she can give Elizabeth an idea of numbers.

There should be some celebrations in the Rethymnon region at the end of June for Naval week, though we haven’t come across any official schedules yet. According to the Plakias guide we were given at one of the tourist offices, celebrations there will include traditional dancing performances in Plakias Square. Plakias along with other places on Crete celebrates Klidonas (Festival associated with John the Baptist) on June 24th.

Aside from what we’ve mentioned, there’s not a great deal to report on the event front for June. But keep checking the www.rethymnon.biz website as events are often only posted in town at the last minute. If you would like to have an event listed in the July issue, please contact Kate via email at editor@rethymnonnews.com or KateBrusten@hotmail.com — deadline for submissions for the July issue is Friday, 22nd June.

Friend of Animals: Bazaar Update

Christina Stylanides reports: To say that our Spring Bazaar, Saturday 19th May, was a wash out would be an understatement!! However, it was not through lack of preparation, hard work or a lot of help. Friends of Animals – Rethymno, would like to sincerely thank everyone who turned out to help and in the process got soaking wet. But we carry on! We still need funds to pay the vets’ bills. Because of public demand, we are looking at giving the park another go! (Our bills at the vets are pretty high!) It looks possible for June 23rd For more information, phone Clodagh 6945170226, Christina 6977130981 or Nelly 6937240399.

Looking Further Ahead: July Festivals

July is traditionally festival season in Rethymnon. The annual summer Renaissance Festival kicks off, and in most previous years the ten day wine festival in the park had started by the end of the month. According to the Renaissance Festival Committee based in the town hall, the schedule is currently being finalized, they hope to be able to distribute programmes from around June 24th. We will chase them up, as we want to include July highlights in our next issue, and once we have the programme we will post it on the www.rethymnon.biz website. As for the wine festival, well, this appears to be up in the air at the moment. This year Rethymnon will host the European Male Youth Basketball Championships at the end of July, and it is thought that trying to hold the wine festival at the same time might be problematic. The organizers are considering postponing the festival until September, but then the weather becomes more unreliable. In short, no-one seems to know what is happening right now.

Competition Winner

Susi was the lucky winner of the ‘most unusual place to pay your utility bill’ competition launched way back in January. Susi, who was the only entrant, as you may remember pays her electricity bill in a pharmacy. In the photo on the right you can see Susi receiving her prize from the editor at a special award ceremony conducted at casa del Bugle. So far, our competitions have not been noted for the stampede to participate. However, we hope that Ian’s competition, which you will find on our Lifestyle page, will change all that!
